Chapter 9: The Recordings That Changed Everything

Chapter 9: The Recordings That Changed Everything

Detective Laura Mitchell drove straight from the District Attorney's Office to the Digital Forensics Unit. Daniel and Lily followed in separate cars, neither of them speaking during the drive.

The deleted folder from Bethany's laptop had been successfully restored.

Its title was simple.

PRIVATE

Inside were twelve video files.

Each had been recorded about six months before Daniel's grandfather, Richard Hayes, died.

Forensic analyst Kevin Dawson connected a laptop to the conference room monitor.

"I should warn you," he said quietly. "These videos are disturbing."

Daniel nodded.

"Play them."

The first video opened in Richard Hayes's study.

The elderly man sat comfortably in a leather chair with a glass of whiskey in his hand.

Someone behind the camera laughed.

Bethany.

"So, Grandpa," she said. "Tell me again why kids are so soft these days."

Richard grinned.

"Because their parents don't know how to raise them."

Bethany laughed.

"What would you have done?"

He took a slow sip of whiskey.

"The same thing my father did to me."

"What was that?"

Richard leaned back.

"You teach fear first."

The room fell silent.

"Fear creates obedience."

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

The second video was even worse.

Bethany wasn't challenging her grandfather.

She was admiring him.

"I tried your cold-water trick once."

Richard chuckled.

"Did it work?"

"The little brat cried for half an hour."

"And?"

"I told her crying only made it funnier."

Richard smiled proudly.

"Good."

He raised his glass.

"They'll remember who's in charge."

Lily covered her mouth.

"Oh, my God..."

Detective Mitchell immediately paused the recording.

"No further."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because we've heard enough to establish a pattern."

She turned to the forensic analyst.

"Copy every file."

Kevin nodded.

"Already done."

The forensic team continued examining the folder.

Among the videos was a scanned notebook belonging to Richard Hayes.

It appeared to be a journal.

Not a diary of emotions.

A handbook.

Page after page described what he called 'discipline methods.'

One sentence had been highlighted.

"Humiliation leaves a deeper lesson than pain."

Another read:

"If one child cries, the others learn faster."

Detective Mitchell closed the file.

"This wasn't discipline."

"It was systematic abuse."

Daniel sat frozen.

For years, he had remembered his grandfather as strict, demanding, impossible to please.

Now he saw something else.

A man who had normalized cruelty until the rest of the family accepted it as tradition.

Lily quietly broke the silence.

"Bethany didn't invent this."

"No," Detective Mitchell agreed.

"But she chose to continue it."

Just then, Kevin looked up from another monitor.

"Detective..."

"What is it?"

"I found something hidden inside one of the videos."

He enlarged a reflection in the glass cabinet behind Richard.

It showed another person sitting silently in the room.

Only part of the face was visible.

Kevin enhanced the image.

Daniel leaned closer.

His heart nearly stopped.

"No..."

Lily stared at the screen.

"It can't be."

Detective Mitchell narrowed her eyes.

"Who is it?"

Daniel answered in a whisper.

"My mother."

The enhanced image clearly showed Margaret Hayes sitting just a few feet away while Richard proudly described humiliating children.

She wasn't arguing.

She wasn't leaving.

She was smiling.

Kevin located the video's metadata.

"Timestamp matches the original file."

"No signs of manipulation."

Detective Mitchell wrote a note.

"This places Margaret in the room during these conversations."

Daniel rubbed his temples.

"She knew exactly where Bethany learned this."

Then Kevin opened the final video.

Unlike the others, it wasn't filmed in Richard's study.

It was recorded in the Hayes family dining room.

The same room where Rosie had been abused.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this after I'm gone..."

He smiled confidently.

"...it means the family is still doing things the right way."

Bethany laughed behind the camera.

Richard continued.

"Never let outsiders tell you how to raise Hayes children."

His expression hardened.

"Protect the family."

"No matter what."

The screen suddenly went black.

No one spoke for several moments.

Finally, Detective Mitchell closed the laptop.

"This changes the case."

Daniel looked up.

"How?"

She met his eyes.

"The prosecution can now demonstrate that Bethany wasn't acting in isolation."

Lily frowned.

"You mean there are more people involved?"

Mitchell nodded slowly.

"I believe so."

Before anyone could respond, Kevin's phone rang from the forensic lab.

He answered, listened for a few seconds, then looked up in disbelief.

"Detective..."

"What happened?"

"The DNA results from the drinking glass thrown at Daniel have just come back."

Daniel frowned.

"Why does that matter?"

Kevin swallowed.

"Because there were two sets of fingerprints..."

May you like

He looked directly at Daniel.

"...and one of them doesn't belong to your father."
