Chapter 5: The Charges

Chapter 5: The Charges

By Monday morning, the Hayes family had become the center of a criminal investigation.

Detectives spent the weekend reviewing every piece of evidence—the hospital photographs, Rosie's forensic interview, Ethan's cell phone video, Daniel's recording from the dining room, the recovered security camera footage, and dozens of witness statements from guests who had attended the birthday party.

One by one, the excuses unraveled.

"It was just a joke."

"It got out of hand."

"She wasn't really hurt."

None of those claims survived the evidence.

Daniel sat in Detective Laura Mitchell's office while Rosie colored quietly at a small table across the room. Every few minutes she glanced at him, making sure he was still there.

He always smiled back.

Detective Mitchell placed a thick case file on her desk.

"We've finished our preliminary investigation."

Daniel nodded silently.

"What happens now?"

"The District Attorney reviewed the evidence early this morning."

She slid a document toward him.

"They've authorized criminal charges."

Daniel stared at the first page.

Bethany Hayes

  • Felony Child Abuse

  • Assault on a Minor

  • False Imprisonment

  • Reckless Endangerment

He slowly turned to the next page.

Margaret Hayes

  • Child Endangerment

  • Failure to Protect a Child

  • Aiding and Abetting Child Abuse

His hands tightened around the file.

"And my father?"

Detective Mitchell didn't answer immediately.

"He admitted throwing the glass."

She opened another folder.

"He's being charged with Aggravated Assault and Reckless Endangerment."

Daniel closed his eyes.

This wasn't revenge.

This was accountability.

At the Hayes family home, the atmosphere was very different.

Margaret paced across the living room while Bethany sat on the couch scrolling through social media.

"They can't actually charge us," Bethany muttered.

Margaret wasn't so sure.

"The police took your phone."

"So?"

"They searched the house."

"So?"

"They interviewed everyone."

Bethany finally looked up.

"They don't have proof."

A loud knock echoed through the house.

Three sharp knocks.

No one moved.

Another knock followed.

Margaret slowly approached the front door.

When she opened it, two uniformed deputies stood beside Detective Mitchell.

"Margaret Hayes?"

"...Yes."

"You are under arrest."

The color drained from Margaret's face.

"What?"

The detective calmly read the charges while one deputy placed handcuffs around her wrists.

"This is ridiculous!" Margaret shouted.

"I never touched that little girl!"

Detective Mitchell met her eyes.

"No."

She spoke evenly.

"But according to multiple witnesses, you encouraged the abuse and did nothing to stop it."

Margaret's protests turned into desperate pleading.

"You don't understand—she's my granddaughter!"

The detective answered quietly.

"That's exactly why we're here."

Upstairs, Bethany had locked herself inside her bedroom.

She was frantically deleting old photos from a laptop she had forgotten investigators had already imaged during the search.

The pounding on her bedroom door made her freeze.

"Bethany Hayes," a deputy called. "Open the door."

She didn't move.

"I know my rights!"

"You do."

Another voice answered.

"And you also have an arrest warrant."

After nearly a minute of silence, the door slowly opened.

Bethany forced a confident smile.

"This will all be dropped."

No one responded.

As the handcuffs clicked around her wrists, she looked toward the front window and saw reporters gathering across the street.

Television cameras.

News vans.

Neighbors standing on their lawns.

Her confident smile disappeared.

Across town, Daniel received a text message from Ethan.

Turn on Channel 8.

He picked up the remote in the hospital family lounge.

Breaking News flashed across the screen.

LOCAL WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGED CHILD ABUSE AT FAMILY BIRTHDAY PARTY

The anchor reported that investigators possessed multiple videos, medical documentation, and eyewitness testimony. Authorities confirmed that additional charges could follow as the investigation continued.

Daniel muted the television before Rosie could hear the details.

She climbed into his lap.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are the mean people gone?"

Daniel wrapped his arms around her.

"For now."

She rested her head against his chest.

"Can we go home soon?"

He kissed the top of her head.

"We're going home."

Rosie smiled sleepily.

"Home with you?"

Daniel's voice was steady.

"Always."

As father and daughter embraced, neither of them knew that investigators had just uncovered another file hidden in Bethany's cloud account.

It contained videos dating back nearly three years.

Rosie wasn't the only child who had been hurt.

She was simply the first one whose father had walked in before it was too late.
