Chapter 2: The Evidence No One Expected

Chapter 2: The Evidence No One Expected
The emergency room was unusually quiet for a Saturday night.
Daniel carried Rosie through the automatic doors, refusing to let her walk. Every time she shifted in his arms, he noticed another bruise—a faint mark near her shoulder, a scrape on her knee, fingerprints darkening along her tiny forearms.
The receptionist looked up with a practiced smile that vanished the instant she saw Rosie.
"What happened?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I need a doctor."
Minutes later, they were escorted into a private examination room. A pediatric nurse named Sarah knelt beside Rosie, speaking softly.
"Hi, sweetheart. My name is Sarah. Can I take a look at your arm?"
Rosie instinctively reached for Daniel.
"It's okay," he whispered. "I'm staying right here."
The examination lasted nearly forty minutes.
The room grew quieter with each new bruise the medical team documented.
Photographs were taken.
Measurements were recorded.
The physician, Dr. Emily Carter, carefully noted the shape and location of every injury before turning toward Daniel.
"Mr. Hayes..."
Her expression had become noticeably more serious.
"These injuries are consistent with forceful grabbing."
Daniel remained silent.
She continued gently.
"And several bruises appear to have occurred within the last two hours."
He finally spoke.
"My sister says it was a joke."
Dr. Carter stared at him for several seconds before answering.
"No responsible adult would call this a joke."
She lowered her clipboard.
"Because Rosie is a minor, I am legally required to report suspected child abuse."
Daniel nodded.
"I was hoping you would."
Dr. Carter blinked, surprised.
"Most parents panic when they hear that."
Daniel looked at Rosie, who had fallen asleep clutching his hand.
"I'm not worried about being investigated."
His voice became firm.
"I'm worried about making sure they never get close to her again."
An hour later, two detectives and a child protective investigator arrived at the hospital.
Detective Laura Mitchell introduced herself quietly before taking Daniel into a consultation room.
"We understand there may have been multiple witnesses."
"There were."
"Were any photos or videos taken?"
Daniel reached into his jacket.
"I recorded part of what happened after I walked in."
He handed over his phone.
The detective watched silently.
Bethany's smirk.
Her words.
It was only a joke.
The slap.
The shattered glass flying toward the doorway.
Daniel shielding Rosie without hesitation.
When the video ended, Detective Mitchell looked up.
"This is important."
Daniel nodded.
"It isn't the whole story."
Before he could explain further, his phone vibrated.
A text message.
From Ethan.
I have another video.
It shows what happened before you arrived.
Daniel's pulse stopped for a heartbeat.
His fingers shook as he opened the message.
Attached was a twenty-three-second video.
The first frame showed Bethany grabbing Rosie's wrists.
The second showed Daniel's mother laughing.
And by the time the clip ended, every person in that dining room had become a witness to a crime.
None of them knew that Ethan had already uploaded a copy to secure cloud storage.
