Chapter 17: Emily Comes Home

Chapter 17: Emily Comes Home

For a moment, no one in the underground room spoke.

Detective Laura Mitchell tightened her grip on the radio.

"Repeat that."

The dispatcher answered immediately.

"The woman with Thomas presented a valid driver's license under the name Emma Brooks."

"She claims she is Emily Carter."

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

Lily covered her mouth with both hands.

"...She's alive."

Mitchell didn't hesitate.

"Bring them to the command center. Have EMS evaluate both of them. No interviews until I arrive."

"Copy."

An hour later, the conference room at the county sheriff's office was filled with investigators, prosecutors, and victim advocates.

The door slowly opened.

Thomas stepped inside first.

He looked exhausted.

Behind him walked a woman in her late twenties.

She wore a gray sweater, blue jeans, and carried herself with quiet confidence.

But her eyes betrayed years of fear.

Daniel recognized them immediately.

They were the same bright green eyes from the old photograph.

She stopped in the doorway.

"So..."

A faint smile appeared.

"I guess my picture finally worked."

Daniel stood slowly.

"...Emily?"

She nodded.

"I answer to Emma now."

"But yes."

"It's really me."

No one rushed toward her.

No dramatic embrace.

Everyone understood that twenty-one years of trauma couldn't disappear in a single moment.

Mitchell gently invited her to sit.

"Would you like some water?"

Emma nodded.

"Please."

Her hands trembled slightly as she accepted the glass.

"I've imagined this day for years."

After a few minutes, Mitchell switched on the recorder.

"For the record, can you state your full name?"

The woman took a slow breath.

"My legal name is Emma Brooks."

She paused.

"But I was born Emily Carter."

The room remained silent.

"My adoptive parents gave me a new name."

Daniel frowned.

"Adoptive parents?"

Emma nodded.

"They saved my life."

She looked toward Thomas.

"He found me."

Everyone turned.

Thomas lowered his head.

"It wasn't exactly like that."

Emma reached over and gently touched his arm.

"You don't have to carry this alone anymore."

She looked back at the investigators.

"Richard didn't kill me."

Daniel closed his eyes in relief.

Mitchell leaned forward.

"What happened?"

Emma's voice was calm.

"After he realized I couldn't remember what I'd overheard..."

"...he panicked."

"He drove me for hours."

"I thought we were going home."

Instead...

"He left me at a small church."

"The one you searched today?"

Emma nodded.

"There was an elderly pastor living there."

"Richard told him I'd been abandoned."

"He gave him money..."

"...and disappeared."

Thomas quietly wiped away tears.

"I found out three days later."

Mitchell looked at him.

"How?"

"I followed my father."

He swallowed hard.

"I saw him leave the church."

"But I was too afraid to confront him."

Daniel stared at his uncle.

"So you knew where Emily was."

Thomas nodded.

"Yes."

"But when I returned..."

"The church was empty."

Emma smiled softly.

"The pastor knew the police would eventually start asking questions."

"So he contacted his sister."

"She and her husband couldn't have children."

"They adopted me legally through emergency protective services after the investigation stalled."

Mitchell looked surprised.

"So your adoption was lawful?"

"Completely."

"My adoptive parents told authorities everything they knew."

"But no one ever connected me to the missing Emily Carter."

Kevin entered carrying a thick folder.

"I checked the records."

He looked astonished.

"She's telling the truth."

"The pastor reported finding an abandoned child."

"But because Emily's hospital records had already been entered incorrectly under another county..."

"The systems never matched."

Mitchell sighed.

"A catastrophic administrative failure."

Emma nodded.

"I spent years wondering why no one came."

Daniel finally found his voice.

"Why didn't you come forward sooner?"

Emma looked at him with kind eyes.

"I tried."

She reached into her purse and removed several unopened letters.

"I wrote to your father."

"I wrote to Margaret."

"I even wrote Bethany once."

"They all came back unopened."

Thomas quietly spoke.

"William intercepted them."

Emma nodded.

"He didn't want anyone knowing I was alive."

Mitchell frowned.

"So why now?"

Emma smiled faintly.

"I saw Rosie's story on the news."

Her expression became serious.

"When I watched Daniel carry his daughter out of that house..."

"I remembered someone else."

She looked directly at him.

"A little boy."

"He stood in front of me."

"He told Richard to stop hurting me."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"The drawing..."

Emma nodded.

"I kept it for years."

"You were the first person who ever tried to protect me."

At that moment, there was another knock at the door.

An FBI agent entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

"Detective Mitchell."

"We've located William Hayes."

Daniel immediately stood.

"Where?"

The agent's expression remained grim.

"He was arrested two hours ago."

Relief washed over the room.

Then the agent continued.

"But before he surrendered..."

"He made one phone call."

Mitchell frowned.

"To whom?"

The agent opened the envelope and removed a prison visitor request.

"It was placed to a correctional facility."

Daniel looked confused.

"Who's there?"

The agent slowly turned the document around.

The visitor request listed only one name.

Richard Hayes.

Silence filled the room.

Daniel stared at the paper.

"My grandfather has been dead for six years."

The FBI agent met his eyes.

"That's what everyone believed."

He paused.

"Our investigation suggests..."

"...Richard Hayes may have faked his death."
