Chapter 3: A Child Finds Her Voice

Chapter 3: A Child Finds Her Voice

The following morning, sunlight filtered through the curtains of Rosie's hospital room. For the first time in hours, she slept peacefully, her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath one arm. Daniel hadn't slept at all.

He sat beside her bed, replaying the events of the previous night. Every laugh. Every excuse. Every bruise.

A gentle knock interrupted his thoughts.

Detective Laura Mitchell entered with a woman carrying a colorful tote bag filled with crayons, puzzles, and stuffed animals.

"This is Megan Brooks," the detective said. "She's a licensed forensic interviewer. She specializes in speaking with children."

Daniel looked at Rosie.

"Will I be with her?"

Megan smiled reassuringly.

"You'll be nearby. We simply need Rosie to feel comfortable telling us what happened in her own words."

Daniel hesitated, then nodded.

"If she wants me, I'm coming in."

"Of course."

An hour later, Rosie sat in a cheerful interview room painted with cartoon animals and bright flowers. Hidden cameras quietly recorded every word.

Megan placed a box of crayons on the table.

"I heard you like drawing."

Rosie nodded shyly.

"My daddy says I color outside the lines."

Megan laughed softly.

"Sometimes that's where the best pictures are."

Rosie smiled for the first time since the party.

They spent several minutes drawing before Megan gently asked,

"Can you tell me why you came to the hospital?"

Rosie's smile disappeared.

"They got mad."

"Who got mad?"

"Aunt Bethany."

"What happened?"

Rosie stared at her drawing.

"I spilled some juice."

"Were you scared?"

She nodded.

"Aunt Bethany grabbed me."

Rosie wrapped her tiny hands around her own wrists, demonstrating exactly how they had been held.

"Like this."

Megan remained calm.

"Then what happened?"

"They said I cried too much."

"Who said that?"

"Grandma."

Tears welled in Rosie's eyes.

"Grandma laughed."

Megan handed her a tissue.

"Take your time."

Rosie wiped her cheeks.

"They poured cold water on me."

"Did you want them to stop?"

"Yes."

"Did they stop?"

Rosie shook her head.

"I said I wanted Daddy."

Her voice became almost inaudible.

"They said Daddy wasn't coming."

Outside the observation room, Daniel covered his face.

Every word felt like another knife.

Detective Mitchell quietly placed a hand on his shoulder.

"She's doing incredibly well."

Daniel whispered,

"No child should ever have to tell this story."

The interview ended nearly an hour later.

As Rosie ran into Daniel's arms, Megan walked over carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

"This interview will become part of the official investigation."

Detective Mitchell nodded.

"And based on what we've heard, we'll be requesting search warrants and formal interviews today."

Before anyone could say another word, Daniel's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed one name.

Mom.

He stared at it without answering.

Seconds later, another call.

Then another.

Finally, a voicemail notification appeared.

Daniel pressed play.

His mother's voice sounded nothing like the angry woman from the night before.

Instead, she sounded frightened.

"Daniel... please call me. The police just showed up at the house."

May you like

She paused, struggling to breathe.

"They... they have a warrant."
