Chapter 4: The House of Secrets

Chapter 4: The House of Secrets
By the time detectives arrived at the Hayes family home, the birthday decorations still hung from the dining room ceiling.
Half-eaten cake remained on the table.
Broken glass still sparkled near the front entrance where Daniel had shielded Rosie.
Only now, the cheerful decorations looked like the backdrop to something much darker.
Bethany opened the front door wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy morning.

"What is this?"
Detective Mitchell held up the warrant.
"We're conducting an investigation into allegations of child abuse and assault."
Bethany scoffed.
"You've got to be kidding."
"No."
She stepped aside reluctantly.
"You won't find anything."
Investigators photographed the dining room from every angle.
The overturned child's chair.
The puddle of dried water on the hardwood floor.
Rosie's small pink shoe tucked beneath the table.
Crime scene technicians collected fingerprints from drinking glasses and nearby furniture.
Then Officer Ramirez stopped in front of the kitchen trash can.
"Detective."
He carefully lifted out a soaked pink birthday sweater.
The tiny garment had been stuffed beneath several trash bags.
"It's still wet."
Nearby lay a torn party hat covered in glitter.
Detective Mitchell frowned.
"Bag everything."
Bethany folded her arms.
"It was an accident."
"Then why throw away the clothes?"
Bethany didn't answer.
Meanwhile, another detective interviewed Daniel's father in the living room.
"I didn't see much."
"You threw a glass at your son."
"I wasn't aiming at the little girl."
The detective looked up sharply.
"So you admit throwing it."
His father realized his mistake too late.
"I..."
"You understand that's assault."
Silence filled the room.
Upstairs, investigators searched Bethany's bedroom.
Inside a dresser drawer they found Rosie's favorite bracelet—the one Daniel had spent nearly an hour searching for before the party.
Beside it sat Bethany's phone.
A forensic technician obtained a warrant to examine its contents immediately.
Within minutes, deleted messages began reappearing.
One group chat caught everyone's attention.
Bethany: Watch this. She's crying already.
Friend: Seriously? 😂
Bethany: Kids need to toughen up somehow.
Another message, sent only minutes before Daniel arrived, chilled the entire investigative team.
Bethany: If my brother gets mad, Mom will handle him like always.
Detective Mitchell slowly lowered the phone.
"This wasn't impulsive."
Another officer nodded.
"It sounds planned."
Just then, a technician hurried downstairs carrying a tablet.
"You need to see this."
He pressed play.
The recovered security camera footage from inside the dining room had no audio—but it didn't need any.
It clearly showed Bethany grabbing Rosie.
Their mother laughing.
And Daniel's father standing nearby...
Doing absolutely nothing to stop it.
The room fell silent.
Detective Mitchell finally spoke.
"I think we're looking at far more than a cruel birthday prank."

She closed the evidence folder with a decisive snap.
"This family has been hiding something for a very long time."
