Chapter 5: Unraveling the Lie

Chapter 5: Unraveling the Lie
The silence in the bridal suite was heavy, thick with the debris of shattered lives. Maya sat perfectly still on the couch, Liam’s oversized suit jacket acting as her only armor. She looked at Eleanor, the woman who had tormented her for the past year.
Eleanor had called Maya "trailer trash." She had hired private investigators to dig up dirt on Maya’s past. She had tried to bribe Maya with a half-million-dollar check to leave Liam just three days before the wedding.
And now, this cruel, bitter woman was looking at her with the desperate, starving eyes of a mother who had finally found her missing child.

"Maya," Eleanor whispered, crawling across the floor toward the sofa, her expensive dress ruined, her dignity completely abandoned. "Please. I am so sorry. For everything I said. For everything I did to you. I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know. If I had known..."
"Don't touch me," Maya said, her voice shaking but firm. She pulled her legs further up on the couch, shrinking away from Eleanor’s outstretched hands. "You don't get to do this. You don't get to torture me for a year, rip my dress off in front of my friends, and then decide you love me because of some biology."
Eleanor recoiled as if she had been slapped. A fresh wave of tears spilled down her face. "You're right. You're so right. I am a monster. But I was so angry, Maya. I was so angry at the world, at Robert, at myself. I took it out on you because I thought you were trying to take Liam away from me. He was all I had left."
Liam walked over to the sofa and gently placed a hand on Maya’s shoulder. He looked down at Eleanor, his expression a mixture of profound pity and deep betrayal.
"We're leaving," Liam said softly.
"Liam, wait," Robert commanded, stepping toward the door. "You walk out that door with her, and I will cut you off completely. You won't have a dime. You won't have a job at the firm. You will be nothing."
Liam looked at Robert, feeling a strange, weightless sense of liberation wash over him. "I've been nothing my whole life, Robert. It's time I start figuring out who I actually am."

He helped Maya to her feet. She was still shivering, clutching the jacket around her ruined dress. Without another word, Liam guided his bride past his supposed parents, opened the heavy oak door, and stepped out into the chaotic hallway. Flashbulbs immediately went off in their faces, but Liam didn't flinch. He wrapped his arm tightly around his fiancée—the true heir to the empire he was leaving behind—and walked out into the cold afternoon air, leaving the wreckage of two families in their wake.
The truth was finally out. But the fallout had only just begun.
