Chapter 2: Echoes of the Past

Chapter 2: Echoes of the Past

Twenty-five years ago, a relentless thunderstorm had battered the windows of a private, off-the-books clinic in upstate New York. Eleanor remembered the sound of the rain against the glass perfectly. It was the night her life had been ripped apart and stitched back together with a lie.

She had been heavily sedated, exhausted from a grueling thirty-six-hour labor. Robert had paced the room, obsessing over securing a male heir to inherit his grandfather's massive shipping empire. The trust fund, worth billions, stipulated that the money could only be passed down to a biological grandson. Robert’s greed had consumed him.

When the baby was finally born, the exhausted nurse had briefly laid the infant on Eleanor’s chest. For exactly two minutes, Eleanor had held her baby. A beautiful, tiny girl with a faint, reddish birthmark on her right shoulder blade. A little swallow, Eleanor had thought, kissing the mark before exhaustion pulled her into a deep sleep.

When she woke up the next morning, the baby girl was gone.

Robert had sat by her bed with a grim, practiced expression, holding a quiet, blue-wrapped bundle. There was a complication, he had lied smoothly, his eyes completely dead. Our daughter didn't make it, Eleanor. But the doctors... they managed to save the boy. We had twins. The girl died. Here is our son.

Eleanor had been heavily drugged, grieving, and entirely dependent on her powerful husband. She had accepted the baby boy, Liam, and raised him with every ounce of love she had left. But deep down, a maternal instinct had always whispered that something was wrong. She had never been pregnant with twins. She knew her own body. Yet, Robert’s gaslighting had been relentless. He convinced her she was hysterical from grief.

Now, kneeling on the cold floor of the chapel, the memories flooded back with agonizing clarity. The lie had survived for two and a half decades.

"You're insane," Robert hissed, grabbing Eleanor by her upper arm and trying to haul her to her feet. His grip was vicious, digging into her skin. "Shut your mouth, Eleanor. You are having a mental breakdown. Someone call an ambulance!"

"Get your hands off her!" Liam shouted, stepping between his father and mother. Despite his anger at Eleanor for ruining his wedding, Liam was inherently protective. He shoved Robert back.

Eleanor looked up at Maya, who was staring down at her with wide, terrified eyes. Maya’s breathing was shallow, her hands clutching Liam's suit jacket.

"You were adopted," Eleanor said to Maya, her voice eerily calm as the truth finally clicked into place. "Weren't you? By a family in Ohio. The Miller family."

Maya froze. Her tears stopped instantly, replaced by a profound, chilling shock. "How... how do you know that?" Maya whispered. "I never told Liam the names of my adoptive parents. I never told anyone. I wanted to leave that part of my life behind."

"Because I remember the paperwork," Eleanor cried out, pointing an accusing finger at her husband. "I found a file in his safe ten years ago. A payoff. Two million dollars to a couple named Miller in Ohio, dated the exact week I gave birth! He told me it was a real estate investment! But it was you. He sold you to them, and he bought Liam to be his heir!"
