Chapter 17: The Trial by Fire

Chapter 17: The Trial by Fire
The fall of Robert Vanderbilt was swift, public, and merciless.
Over the next six months, the media fed endlessly on the trial of the century. The prosecution's case was an ironclad labyrinth of financial fraud, wire manipulation, and human trafficking. The original NDAs from the floor safe were the killing blow. Robert sat at the defense table, his arrogant posture slowly deteriorating as his former allies, board members, and even his own wife testified against him.
When the judge finally handed down a sentence of forty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, Robert didn't look at his lawyer. He turned and looked at the gallery, locking eyes with Liam. Liam didn't flinch. He simply turned his back and walked out of the courtroom, leaving the ghost of his father behind forever.

Meanwhile, Maya inherited an empire she never wanted.
As the sole biological heir of the Vanderbilt trust, the multi-billion-dollar shipping conglomerate and its vast real estate holdings legally belonged to her. The board of directors expected her to install a puppet CEO and collect her dividends quietly.
Instead, Maya fired them all.
Sitting in the massive, glass-walled boardroom of Vanderbilt Tower, Maya and Julian Vance systematically dismantled the toxic legacy.
"We are liquidating the offshore holdings," Maya instructed the terrified interim executives. "The corporate mansions in the Hamptons and London go on the market tomorrow. The proceeds will fund a foundation for victims of illegal adoptions and trafficking. As for the shipping company itself, we are restructuring it into an employee-owned cooperative."
"Ms. Vanderbilt, you are giving away billions of dollars," one of the older executives sputtered, wiping sweat from his brow.
"My name is Maya Miller," she corrected him, her voice holding the absolute authority she had inherited from Eleanor, but tempered with the kindness of the parents who raised her. "And this money was built on stolen lives. I don't want it. Clean house, gentlemen, or I will let the SEC do it for you."
As she walked out of the boardroom, she felt a profound weight lift off her chest. She wasn't just erasing Robert's power; she was erasing the poison he had injected into the world.
She took the elevator down to the lobby, where Liam was waiting for her. He wore a simple leather jacket and jeans, looking more relaxed than she had ever seen him.
"How did it go?" Liam asked, handing her a coffee.

"It's gone," Maya smiled, looping her arm through his. "All of it. We're broke."
Liam threw his head back and laughed, a genuine, booming sound that echoed through the marble atrium. "Thank God. Let's get out of here."
