Chapter 19: The New Vows

Chapter 19: The New Vows

A year to the day after the catastrophic wedding in Manhattan, a very different ceremony was being prepared in the backyard of a modest home in Ohio.

There were no paparazzi. There were no ice sculptures, caviar towers, or three-hundred-person guest lists full of strangers. Instead, there were string lights woven through the branches of an old oak tree, folding chairs arranged on the grass, and the smell of Martha Miller’s famous barbecue wafting from the patio.

Maya stood in her childhood bedroom, looking at her reflection in the mirror.

She wasn't wearing a fifty-thousand-dollar designer gown. She wore a simple, elegant ivory slip dress she had bought off the rack at a local boutique. It had thin straps and a low back, intentionally leaving her shoulder blades entirely exposed.

There was a soft knock on the door, and Eleanor stepped inside.

The past year of intensive therapy and separation from the Vanderbilt toxicity had transformed Eleanor. She looked softer, her face lined but finally at peace. She held a small wooden box in her hands.

"You look beautiful, Maya," Eleanor said, her voice thick with emotion. She stepped forward, opening the box. Inside was a simple string of pearls. "These belonged to my grandmother. The real ones, not the ones Robert bought me to show off. I would be honored if you wore them."

Maya smiled, turning her back so Eleanor could clasp the pearls around her neck. As Eleanor secured the clasp, her fingers gently brushed the faded, swallow-shaped birthmark on Maya's shoulder.

Eleanor didn't recoil. She didn't cry. She just smiled softly. "The little swallow. It brought you back to me."

"It brought us all back to where we belong," Maya agreed, turning around to hug the woman who had given her life. They had built a fragile, honest relationship over the past year. It wasn't perfect, but it was real.

"Are you ready?" Thomas asked, popping his head into the doorway, beaming with pride.

"More than ready, Dad," Maya said, taking his arm.

As the acoustic guitar began to play softly in the backyard, Maya and Thomas walked down the short, grass aisle. Liam stood under the oak tree, waiting for her. He wasn't wearing a custom Tom Ford tuxedo. He wore a sharp navy suit, a genuine smile illuminating his face.

He looked at Maya, and the world completely fell away.
