Chapter 15: The Ultimatum

"You really thought you could outsmart me?" Robert asked, his voice lethally calm. He stepped into the study, kicking the heavy mahogany door shut behind him. The lock clicked, trapping them both inside. "Did you think I wouldn't have a silent alarm triggered if the safe was opened while I was out of the house? The board meeting was a clever distraction, Liam. But I am always one step ahead."

Liam stood perfectly still, the manila envelope clutched tightly in his left hand. His heart was hammering against his ribs, but he forced his face into a mask of complete indifference.

"Put the gun down, Robert," Liam said, his voice steady. "The FBI is already unsealing your financials. Julian Vance has the courts freezing your assets. It’s over. This doesn't end with you winning."

"It ends with me surviving," Robert sneered, raising the gun slightly, aiming it squarely at Liam's chest. "I built this empire from nothing. I will not let it be torn down by a hysterical woman, a midwestern schoolteacher's brat, and a bastard I bought for spare parts."

Robert held out his free hand. "Give me the file, Liam. I’m going to burn it in the fireplace. Then, you are going to walk out of this house, get in your car, and disappear. If you do that, I won't put a bullet in you."

Liam looked at the gun. He knew Robert was a ruthless businessman, but murder? This was a line he had never crossed.

"You won't shoot me," Liam challenged, taking a slow half-step forward. "You're a coward, Robert. You hire fixers and lawyers to do your dirty work. You don't pull the trigger yourself. The noise, the blood, the police... you couldn't handle the mess."

Robert’s hand trembled, the muscles in his jaw ticking frantically. The empire was collapsing around him, and cornered animals were always the most dangerous. "Don't test me, boy. You have no idea what I am capable of to protect my legacy."

"Your legacy is dead!" Liam roared, throwing the envelope onto the leather sofa. "Your wife despises you. Your real daughter is actively dismantling your company. And the son you raised is standing here telling you that you are nothing but a pathetic, desperate old man."

Robert let out a feral shout, raising the gun higher.

Suddenly, the glass of the study’s French doors shattered inward in a spectacular explosion. The deafening sound of a stun grenade echoed through the room, blinding them both in a flash of brilliant white light.

Liam hit the floor instantly, covering his head.

"FBI! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"

Armed tactical agents swarmed into the study from the balcony. Robert, blinded and disoriented by the blast, stumbled backward, dropping the revolver as three agents tackled him to the Persian rug. Handcuffs clicked viciously around his wrists.

Julian Vance stepped through the broken glass doors, dusting off the shoulders of his immaculate suit. He looked down at the struggling, screaming billionaire, then offered a hand to help Liam off the floor.

"I took the liberty of informing the authorities that you might need some backup," Julian said with a cool smile. "We tracked your rental car."

Liam caught his breath, looking from Julian to the envelope on the sofa. He picked it up and handed it to the lead FBI agent.

"Here," Liam said, his voice thick with emotion. "This is the proof. The Miller family is completely innocent."

Robert Vanderbilt was hauled to his feet, his face pressed against the desk he had ruled from for decades. He looked at Liam with pure, unadulterated venom.

But Liam just turned his back, walking out of the study without saying another word. He had a family waiting for him in the city. A real family.
