Chapter 12: The Safe House

The reunion at the private airstrip was a collision of tears and terror. As soon as the jet’s stairs were lowered, Maya sprinted across the tarmac. Thomas and Martha Miller—a retired high school history teacher and a former pediatric nurse—wrapped their arms around their daughter, shielding her just as they had done her entire life.

"We're here, sweetheart. We're right here," Thomas murmured, kissing the top of Maya's head while Martha openly wept, stroking Maya's hair.

Once they were safely transported to a secure, unlisted brownstone rented under Julian Vance’s corporate account, the adrenaline began to wear off, leaving a grim reality in its wake. Maya sat between her parents on the velvet sofa, Liam standing watch by the window.

"They told us we had to leave the state immediately," Thomas explained, his voice rough with age and lingering fear. He looked at Julian Vance, who was taking meticulous notes. "Twenty-five years ago, a man in a black suit came to our door. Martha and I had been on the adoption waiting list for five years. He handed us a baby girl and a briefcase containing two million dollars in bearer bonds."

"We thought it was a miracle," Martha whispered, clutching Maya's hand. "But then the man pulled out a gun and laid it on our kitchen table. He told us we were to sign a non-disclosure agreement. He said if we ever tried to find the biological parents, or if we ever spoke a word of the transaction, we would be killed, and the baby would be taken back."

Liam closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against the cool glass of the window. The depths of Robert’s depravity seemed completely bottomless.

"We were terrified," Thomas continued, his voice hardening. "We packed our bags that same night and moved to Ohio. We changed our phone numbers. We erased our digital footprints."

"What about the money?" Julian asked carefully. "Robert is claiming you demanded that money as an extortion payment to keep quiet about his illegitimate child."

Thomas let out a bitter, exhausted laugh. "We never touched it. Not a single red cent. We put the bearer bonds into a lockbox at a local credit union. We raised Maya on a teacher’s salary. We wanted absolutely nothing to do with blood money."

Julian’s eyes lit up. "You still have the bonds? Untouched?"

"Every last one of them," Martha confirmed.

"That obliterates his extortion narrative," Julian said, pacing the room with renewed energy. "If you never spent the money, there is no financial motive for a blackmail scheme. But," Julian sighed, "Liam is right. To completely shield you from an indictment, we need the original, un-doctored NDAs that prove Robert threatened you under duress."

"I know where they are," Liam said, turning away from the window. His eyes were dark, burning with a dangerous resolve. "He keeps a biometric safe in the floor of his study at the Hamptons estate. He uses it for his most sensitive off-the-books leverage."

"Liam, no," Maya said, standing up quickly. "You can't go there. If his security catches you..."

"I'm still technically his son," Liam said, a bitter smile touching his lips. "And I still have the security codes."
