Chapter 7 - The Repo Man Cometh

My cell phone started ringing absolutely off the hook at exactly 1:14 PM.

I was sitting peacefully at my favorite corner cafe, sipping an iced vanilla latte.

The caller ID flashed Mark’s name in bright red letters.

I casually took a sip of my coffee and let it go straight to voicemail.

He called exactly fourteen more times in the span of five minutes.

Finally, a furious text message lit up my phone screen.

"Pick up the damn phone, Sarah!" the message read.

"My debit card just got declined at the luxury car dealership!"

"They are literally threatening to repossess my Porsche!"

I smiled so widely that my cheeks actually started to hurt.

I slowly typed back a very polite, perfectly punctuated response.

"That sounds like a personal financial problem, Mark."

"I suggest you ask your mother to float you a quick loan."

His incoming text bubbles rapidly appeared and disappeared on the screen.

He was clearly frantically typing and deleting his angry responses.

"You legally can't do this to me!" he finally sent back.

"I am your husband and I demand access to our joint checking account!"

I took a quick screenshot of his incredibly pathetic, desperate demand.

I immediately forwarded the digital image directly to Diane for our growing evidence file.

Exactly ten minutes later, another completely unknown number flashed on my screen.

I answered it cautiously, pressing the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" I asked calmly.

"Sarah, you deeply vindictive, horrible woman!" Beatrice’s shrill voice screeched loudly through the speaker.

"How dare you cut my son off from his own money!"

"We are currently standing in the grocery store and we can't even buy our own dinner!"

I let out a soft, mocking laugh that I knew would drive her absolutely insane.

"I highly suggest you put the lobster tails back on the ice, Beatrice."

"Perhaps you can find a nice, cheap bag of cold potatoes in the produce aisle."

"I hear they build incredible character when you are forced to eat them alone."

I hung up the phone sharply before she could scream another nasty insult.

I quickly blocked her number with a deeply satisfying tap of my thumb.

The golden tower of their pathetic, manipulative lies was completely crashing down around them.
