Chapter 5 - The Police Escort

The massive front door stood wide open to the neighborhood.

A cool, refreshing evening breeze drifted quietly through the large foyer.

Mark was violently struggling to drag a massive, overstuffed suitcase down the concrete porch steps.

Beatrice and Ellie were already sitting inside Mark’s cramped sports car.

They looked exactly like two angry, miserable gargoyles perched in the expensive leather seats.

Ellie’s son, Tyler, was completely oblivious to the drama, playing loudly on an iPad in the back.

I stood confidently in the doorway, crossing my arms over my chest.

Mark paused heavily at the bottom of the long steps.

He was sweating profusely, his expensive tailored suit totally wrinkled and ruined.

He looked up at me with dark eyes full of pure, unfiltered venom.

"You are going to deeply regret this, Sarah," he hissed like a snake.

"You think you can just throw me out like yesterday's trash?"

"I am going to take you for absolutely everything you have."

"I will leave you completely penniless in the gutter."

I smiled down at his pathetic, sweating face.

It was a cold, completely empty smile.

"Good luck with that," I replied cheerfully.

"I really hope you can afford a good lawyer with your completely nonexistent savings."

Just as he angrily opened his mouth to shout another empty threat, a police cruiser pulled directly into the driveway.

The bright red and blue flashing lights brightly illuminated the manicured front lawn.

Mark froze completely in absolute panic.

Two heavily uniformed police officers stepped out of the official vehicle.

They approached the driveway slowly with their hands resting cautiously on their utility belts.

"Is there a major problem here?" the taller officer asked, looking suspiciously between me and Mark.

"No problem at all, officer," I called out clearly from the high porch.

"My soon-to-be ex-husband and his lovely family were just leaving."

"They were officially given an eviction notice and were just gathering their personal things."

"I just wanted to ensure the final transition was peaceful for everyone involved."

Mark’s face flushed bright, angry crimson with absolute public humiliation.

All of our nosy suburban neighbors were definitely watching from behind their living room curtains now.

"I'm leaving right now!" Mark snapped angrily at the officers.

"She's completely crazy!"

He forcefully shoved the very last suitcase into the tiny trunk.

He slammed it shut so hard I genuinely thought the rear glass might shatter into pieces.

He marched aggressively over to the driver's side and ripped the door wide open.

Before he finally got in, he pointed a shaking, furious finger directly at me.

"This isn't over by a long shot," he yelled for the whole street to hear.

"We'll see exactly what the judge has to say about you illegally locking me out!"

He jumped frantically into the car and peeled out of the paved driveway.

The expensive tires screeched loudly and dramatically against the dark asphalt.

The two officers watched them speed away recklessly down the quiet suburban street.

"Are you completely safe here, ma'am?" the younger officer asked me kindly.

"I finally am now," I answered him completely honestly.

I thanked them graciously for their quick time and slowly closed the heavy front door.

I engaged the metal deadbolt with a solid click.

I typed a brand new, highly secure code into the glowing security alarm panel.

The sudden silence in the massive house finally felt peaceful instead of totally oppressive.

I walked calmly back into the formal dining room.

The sad, cold boiled potato still sat perfectly on the cheap plastic plate in the corner.

I picked it up firmly and threw it directly into the stainless steel trash can.

Then, I started happily clearing away the rest of the ruined, expensive feast.

Tomorrow morning, I had a very important meeting scheduled with the most ruthless divorce attorney in the entire state.

Mark stupidly thought he was going to take everything from me.

He had absolutely no idea the absolute legal hellfire I was about to rain down on his pathetic life.
