Chapter 2 - The Provider Myth

Beatrice instantly burst into theatrical, loud tears.
It was a brilliant performance worthy of an Academy Award.
She dropped her chicken onto the fine china plate and rushed toward her son.
"Oh, Mark!" she wailed at the top of her lungs.
"Thank God you are finally home!"
Mark looked entirely confused as his mother threw her arms tightly around his neck.
"Mom?" he asked with genuine concern.

"What’s wrong?"
He patted her back awkwardly while looking around the room.
Ellie chimed in right on cue with her shrill voice.
"Your wife has completely lost her mind, Mark!"
"She's actively trying to kick us out onto the street!"
"She said we have exactly two hours to pack our bags and leave!"
Mark’s expression darkened immediately.
He pushed his weeping mother gently aside.
He marched aggressively into the dining room.
His angry eyes landed directly on me.
They didn't hold a single ounce of love, patience, or understanding.
"What the hell is going on here, Sarah?" he demanded angrily.
His booming voice echoed through the high, vaulted ceilings.
He completely ignored Dustin, who was visibly trembling in the corner.
"I told them to leave," I said with terrifying calm.
"They are no longer welcome in my home."
Mark scoffed loudly, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Your home?" he mocked cruelly.
"Since when do you make the big rules around here?"
"My mother and sister are staying."
"You need to apologize to them right this second."
I didn't blink once.
I didn't back down an inch.
"I am not apologizing to women who actively abuse my son," I replied.
I pointed a shaking finger at the cheap plastic plate on the hardwood floor.
"Look at what they fed him, Mark."
"Look at what they made him eat while Tyler gorged himself on a massive feast."
Mark barely glanced at the sad, cold potato.
He let out an incredibly annoyed sigh.
"Is this really what you're throwing a massive fit over?"
"A stupid potato?"
"Mom probably just wanted him to finally eat some healthy vegetables."
"You're always completely overreacting when it comes to Dustin."
The brutal betrayal hit me like a physical blow right to the chest.
He wasn't even trying to defend us.
He was taking their side, just like he always cowardly did.
Beatrice smirked triumphantly from behind Mark's broad shoulder.
"See?" she whispered loudly to Ellie.
"I told you he would quickly put her back in her place."
I pulled my phone from my back pocket.
I unlocked the bright screen and opened the saved video file.
"Are you absolutely sure about that, Mark?" I asked softly.
I pressed the play button.
I turned the media volume all the way up.
Beatrice’s cruel, nasty voice filled the tense silence of the room.
"Children who aren’t really family need discipline."
The crystal-clear recording played out loud for everyone to hear.
Mark’s handsome face drained of all color.
He immediately recognized the absolute venom in his mother's tone.
But instead of getting angry at her, he turned his unhinged wrath directly on me.
"You secretly recorded my mother?" he yelled furiously.
"How dare you completely violate her privacy in my house!"
That was the exact moment my marriage officially died.
Any lingering hope I had for our blended family vanished into thin air.
"I didn't record her," I corrected him smoothly.
"Your lovely sister Ellie did."
"She accidentally left her phone running on the counter for her little vlog."
Ellie gasped sharply, covering her open mouth with her manicured hand.
"But that doesn't even matter right now," I continued relentlessly.
"What matters is that I want them out of my house immediately."
Mark stepped much closer to me, trying to use his height to physically intimidate me.
"This is my house," he sneered right into my face.
"I pay all the bills."
"I make all the money."
"You are just my wife."
I couldn't help it this time.

I laughed right in his angry face.
"Mark, you haven't paid a single mortgage payment in three entire years."
