Chapter 6 - The Shark in a Pinstripe Suit

The morning sun streamed brightly through the massive bay windows of my kitchen.

For the very first time in three years, the house felt completely entirely mine.

There was no sound of Beatrice loudly complaining about her arthritis.

There was no sound of Ellie shrieking at her iPad while ignoring her own child.

And there was no Mark, sitting at the head of the table pretending to be the king of a castle he didn’t own.

I cooked a massive, beautiful breakfast of fluffy pancakes and crispy bacon.

Dustin sat at the kitchen island, swinging his little legs happily.

A huge, genuine smile was plastered across his sweet, freckled face.

He ate three whole pancakes, completely forgetting about the cold boiled potato from last night.

I packed his favorite superhero lunchbox and dropped him off at his elementary school with a huge hug.

Then, I drove my practical SUV straight into the heart of the downtown financial district.

I marched confidently into the sleek, glass-walled offices of Sterling & Vance Legal Associates.

Diane Sterling was widely known as the absolute most ruthless divorce attorney in the entire state.

Her wealthy, high-profile clients affectionately called her the Black Widow.

She was an incredibly intimidating woman in a sharp navy pinstripe suit.

I sat down in the luxurious leather chair across from her massive mahogany desk.

I didn't waste a single second of her expensive hourly rate.

I handed over my silver laptop and played the hidden vlog video for her.

Diane watched the entire recording with a perfectly blank, calculating expression.

She listened to Beatrice and Ellie plotting to steal my money and ship my son away.

When the video finally ended, Diane softly clicked her expensive gold pen.

A slow, terrifyingly predatory smile spread across her sharp features.

"Your husband is a spectacularly stupid man, Sarah," Diane said smoothly.

"He actually thought he could break an iron-clad prenuptial agreement that my firm personally drafted."

I felt a massive wave of relief wash over my entire body.

"What is our absolute best next move, Diane?" I asked eagerly.

"First, we immediately sever all of his financial lifelines," she instructed sharply.

"I am officially freezing every single joint credit card you accidentally left open."

"We are redirecting your direct deposits into a brand new, highly secure offshore account."

"He will not have access to a single penny of your hard-earned money to fund his legal defense."

"By noon today, his fancy little sports car will bounce its monthly lease payment."

"Let's see exactly how much his dear mother loves him when he can't buy her expensive wine anymore."
