Chapter 6: The Recording That Could Destroy Them All

For several minutes after my father spoke, nobody moved.

The office that had always represented strength and control suddenly felt like a place filled with ghosts.

My mother.

Daniel Vale.

My uncle.

Adrian.

All of them connected by a secret that had been hidden from me for most of my life.

And now the one piece of evidence that could reveal everything was in Adrian Cross’s hands.

The man who had spent two years trying to destroy me.

“The recording…” I whispered.

My father looked at me.

“Yes.”

“How do you know Adrian has it?”

He looked away.

And that hesitation told me there was more.

“Dad.”

He took a deep breath.

“Because I gave it to him.”

The words hit me harder than anything Adrian had ever said.

I stared at him.

“What?”

My father closed his eyes.

“Not intentionally.”

“Then explain.”

For the first time in my life, I saw my father struggle to find the right words.

The billionaire.

The businessman.

The man who could negotiate billion-dollar deals without blinking.

Was afraid of a conversation with his own daughter.

“After your mother disappeared, I spent years searching for answers.”

He walked slowly around the office.

“I knew Daniel was involved, but I never had enough proof.”

“And the recording?”

“Your mother made it before the accident.”

My heartbeat increased.

“What was on it?”

My father stopped.

“Evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

He looked at me.

“Evidence that Daniel was planning to take control of Whitmore Capital.”

I swallowed.

“And how did Adrian get it?”

My father’s face became darker.

“Because Adrian was never just Daniel’s employee.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?”

“Adrian is Daniel’s son.”

The room stopped.

I stared at him.

“No.”

My father nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

The connection.

The obsession.

The years of planning.

The hatred toward my family.

Adrian Cross was not a random enemy.

He was the son of the man who destroyed my mother’s life.

“He knew who I was before he met me.”

My father nodded.

“Yes.”

I sat down slowly.

The memories came rushing back.

Our first meeting.

The way Adrian seemed interested in every detail about my life.

The questions about my childhood.

My family.

My relationship with my father.

At the time, I thought he was trying to understand me.

Now I realized he was collecting information.

“He studied me.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“Yes.”

“He studied my family.”

“Yes.”

“And I thought he loved me.”

The last sentence came out quietly.

My father walked toward me.

“Elena…”

I raised my hand.

Not because I wanted him to stop.

Because I needed a moment.

For two years, I had mourned a marriage that was never real.

That was the cruelest part.

I was not only escaping abuse.

I was grieving a person who never existed.

A man I loved.

A man who had only been pretending.

A knock interrupted the room.

Claire entered quickly.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

My father looked up.

“What happened?”

“Adrian Cross just made a public statement.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did he say?”

Claire handed him a tablet.

The headline appeared immediately.

ADRIAN CROSS DENIES ALL ALLEGATIONS, CLAIMS HE WAS THE VICTIM OF A FAMILY POWER STRUGGLE

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Even now, he was controlling the story.

The video started.

Adrian stood outside a courthouse surrounded by reporters.

His expression was perfect.

The same expression that fooled investors.

The same expression that fooled me.

“I have always respected my wife, Elena.”

I felt anger rise.

“My only goal has ever been protecting my family.”

My father clenched his jaw.

Adrian continued.

“Unfortunately, powerful people sometimes use their influence to silence others.”

The reporters listened.

“And today, I believe the public deserves to know the truth.”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

It was me.

The wedding photo.

The one where I was smiling.

The one where I believed I had found happiness.

Adrian’s voice continued.

“Elena Whitmore entered this marriage while hiding her true identity.”

The reporters began shouting questions.

“She lied about who she was.”

My hands tightened.

“She hid a billion-dollar inheritance.”

A lie.

A complete lie.

But the world did not know that.

Adrian looked directly into the cameras.

“I loved my wife.”

A pause.

“But I was betrayed.”

The video ended.

The room remained silent.

“He’s turning it around,” I said.

My father nodded.

“That was always his plan.”

“He wants people to think I manipulated him.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the screen.

“He’s going to destroy my reputation.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“He is going to try.”

That was different.

A year ago, those words would have scared me.

Now?

They made me angry.

I stood.

“Where is he?”

My father looked surprised.

“What?”

“Where is Adrian?”

“Elena—”

“I need to talk to him.”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“You are eight months pregnant. You are not going anywhere near him.”

I looked at my father.

“Dad.”

He stopped.

“I spent two years waiting for someone to save me.”

My voice became stronger.

“I don’t want to hide anymore.”

My father looked at me.

“I want the recording.”

Everyone became silent.

Because they knew.

The recording was the key.

Without it, Adrian could manipulate the public.

With it, everything would collapse.

Claire spoke carefully.

“There is one problem.”

“What?”

“Adrian knows we need it.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“Because someone inside Whitmore Capital informed him.”

Again.

Someone inside.

The betrayal never ended.

My father immediately turned serious.

“Find the leak.”

Claire nodded.

But before she left, my phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

This time, there was no message.

Only a location.

And one sentence.

Come alone if you want the recording.

I showed my father.

His face changed.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You know who sent it.”

He did not answer.

“Dad.”

Finally, he spoke.

“It’s Adrian.”

I stared at the message.

A trap.

Obviously.

But it was also my only chance.

My father saw my expression.

“No.”

“I have to go.”

“Elena.”

“He has the recording.”

“And he wants you alone.”

“I know.”

My father stepped closer.

“You are not walking into a trap.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

I placed my hand over my stomach.

“I’m walking into the place where this started.”

My father shook his head.

“I lost your mother because I could not protect her.”

His voice broke.

“I will not lose you too.”

I softened.

“I’m not your wife, Dad.”

A tear fell from his eye.

“I’m your daughter.”

The words changed something.

Because for the first time, my father understood.

I was not asking permission.

I was making a choice.

And after everything Adrian had taken from me…

I was finally taking something back.

My voice was calm.

“I’m going.”

My father looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Not fear.

Pride.

“Then you won’t go alone.”

I looked confused.

“What?”

He picked up his phone.

“Because if Adrian wants a meeting…”

He looked toward the city outside.

“He’s going to get one.”

A pause.

“With everyone watching.”

Three hours later, I stood outside an abandoned warehouse on the edge of Chicago.

The place where Adrian wanted to meet.

The place where he believed he still had control.

But he was wrong.

Because hidden cameras were already recording.

My father’s security team was nearby.

Law enforcement had been informed.

And for the first time…

Adrian Cross was the one walking into a trap.

The warehouse door opened.

Adrian stood inside.

Alone.

He smiled when he saw me.

“I knew you would come.”

I looked at him.

“You always knew I would.”

He nodded.

“That was always your weakness.”

I stared at him.

“What weakness?”

His smile widened.

“You still believe there is good in people.”

He stepped closer.

“But tonight, Elena…”

He lifted a small black device.

“You’re going to learn the truth about your mother.”

My heart stopped.

Because in his hand…

May you like

Was the recording.

To be continued…
