Chapter 12: The Final Secret of the Cross Family

The farmhouse went completely dark.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The only sound was the wind pushing against the windows.

My mother’s hand tightened around mine.

Twenty years of hiding.

Twenty years of running.

And somehow, the past had finally found her.

My father stepped in front of us.

The same protective instinct he had carried my entire life returned instantly.

But this time, I saw something different.

He was not just protecting his daughter.

He was protecting his family.

A loud knock echoed through the farmhouse.

Not a desperate knock.

Not an impatient one.

A confident one.

The kind made by someone who believed they still had control.

Adrian.

“Open the door.”

His voice traveled through the house.

My mother closed her eyes.

“He brought her.”

I looked at her.

“Margaret?”

She nodded.

“She knows everything.”

My father looked toward the entrance.

“Then tonight she tells the truth.”

The door opened before anyone touched it.

Adrian walked inside.

Behind him stood Margaret Cross.

But she looked nothing like the woman who once stood in our mansion drinking wine while her son threatened me.

She looked tired.

Broken.

Like the weight of her own choices had finally caught up with her.

Adrian looked at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The man who had once terrified me was standing in front of me.

But I noticed something.

He was no longer looking at me like someone he owned.

He was looking at me like someone who had escaped him.

“Where is the recording?”

My father’s voice was cold.

Adrian ignored him.

His eyes moved to my mother.

“Sophia.”

My mother looked away.

“You should not have come.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

“Neither should you.”

The tension in the room became unbearable.

I stepped forward.

“Why are you here?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Because I finally know the truth.”

I frowned.

“What truth?”

He looked at Margaret.

Then back at me.

“My entire life was built on a lie.”

Nobody spoke.

Adrian continued.

“My father told me Victor Whitmore destroyed our family.”

My father remained silent.

“He told me your family stole everything from us.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“And I believed him.”

I watched his expression.

For the first time, I saw regret.

Real regret.

“But Daniel Vale was never trying to restore our family.”

Adrian looked at Margaret.

“He was trying to create his own empire.”

Margaret lowered her head.

I looked at her.

“You knew.”

She did not answer.

“You knew Daniel was manipulating Adrian.”

Still silence.

My voice became sharper.

“You watched him destroy me.”

Margaret finally looked at me.

“I know.”

“That’s all you have to say?”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“No.”

She took a breath.

“I was wrong.”

The words surprised me.

Not because they fixed anything.

They didn’t.

But because Margaret Cross had never admitted fault before.

“I thought I was protecting my son.”

She looked at Adrian.

“I thought giving him power would make him safe.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You helped destroy my life.”

Her expression broke.

“I know.”

A painful silence followed.

My father stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You think so?”

Everyone turned.

Because there was something strange in her voice.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

“What do you mean?”

She looked toward the windows.

“Daniel is not coming for the company.”

My father frowned.

“Then what does he want?”

Margaret looked at me.

“He wants Elena.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Because Elena is the final piece.”

I stared at her.

“Final piece of what?”

My mother answered quietly.

“The Whitmore Legacy Trust.”

Everyone looked at her.

My mother continued.

“When your grandfather created the trust, he placed a condition.”

My father looked confused.

“What condition?”

She looked at me.

“The next heir must willingly choose the family legacy.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.”

My mother stepped closer.

“Daniel cannot legally control Whitmore Capital.”

My father nodded.

“That’s why he needed Alexander.”

“Yes.”

“But Alexander failed.”

“Yes.”

My mother looked at me.

“So Daniel created another plan.”

My stomach tightened.

“Me.”

She nodded.

“He wanted you to inherit everything, then control you.”

The truth was horrifying.

My entire marriage.

My pregnancy.

My isolation.

Everything.

It was never only about destroying my father.

It was about controlling me.

Adrian looked at me.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know a lot of things.”

He accepted that.

Because it was true.

My mother walked toward the table.

She picked up the original recording.

“This is why Daniel wanted this.”

She held it tightly.

“Because this proves he murdered your grandfather.”

My father froze.

“What?”

The room went silent.

My mother pressed play.

A new section of the recording began.

Daniel’s voice.

“You don’t have to worry about the old man anymore.”

Alexander’s voice followed.

“Are you sure?”

Daniel laughed.

“He won’t interfere again.”

My father covered his mouth.

Because now he understood.

Alexander was not the mastermind.

He was another person Daniel manipulated.

The recording continued.

Daniel:

“Once Victor takes over, everyone will blame him.”

Alexander:

“And me?”

Daniel:

“You’ll get your share.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

The truth was finally clear.

Daniel Vale had spent decades creating enemies.

Turning family against family.

Using anger.

Using greed.

Using people.

And everyone had fallen into his trap.

Suddenly, a sound came from outside.

A vehicle approaching.

My father looked toward the window.

Security had arrived.

But then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone became silent.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Daniel’s voice.

The man behind everything.

“Hello, Elena.”

My blood ran cold.

“You’re nearby.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A quiet laugh.

“Because I want to see the moment you finally understand.”

My father grabbed the phone.

“Daniel.”

Daniel laughed.

“Victor.”

The hatred between them was obvious.

“You lost.”

“No.”

Daniel replied calmly.

“You still don’t understand.”

A pause.

“You think this was about money?”

Everyone froze.

“Then what was it about?”

Daniel answered:

“Revenge.”

A pause.

“And Elena.”

My hand tightened.

“What about me?”

His voice became colder.

“You are the reason your mother survived.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She made a choice twenty years ago.”

Daniel whispered.

“She chose you over herself.”

My mother started crying.

Daniel continued:

“And now you have to make the same choice.”

The call ended.

I looked at my family.

And I knew.

The final battle had arrived.

Not for money.

Not for power.

May you like

But for the choice that would decide everything.

To be continued…
