Chapter 2: The Secret My Father Never Told Me

The first morning without Adrian felt strangely quiet.

Not peaceful.

Not yet.

Just quiet.

For two years, I had woken up every day listening for the sound of his footsteps.

I had learned the rhythm of his anger.

The way his office door slammed when something went wrong.

The way his voice changed when he wanted to hurt me without leaving evidence.

I had memorized every warning sign.

But that morning, there was nothing.

No shouting.

No threats.

No cold smile telling me I should be grateful he had chosen me.

Only sunlight coming through the bedroom curtains.

I sat on the edge of the bed, one hand resting over my stomach.

My son was still asleep inside me.

Safe.

For the first time in months, I allowed myself to believe that.

Safe.

A soft knock came at the door.

“Come in.”

The door opened slowly.

My father stepped inside.

Victor Whitmore.

The man who could silence boardrooms with a single sentence.

The man who controlled billions of dollars.

But standing in my bedroom, he looked different.

He looked like a father who had discovered his daughter had been suffering alone.

“Did you sleep?”

I nodded.

“A little.”

He looked at me carefully.

“You don’t have to pretend with me.”

That sentence almost broke me.

Because pretending had become my entire life.

I looked away.

“I’m sorry.”

My father frowned.

“For what?”

“For hiding everything.”

He walked closer.

“Elena.”

I looked at him.

“You didn’t hide because you wanted to hurt me.”

His voice softened.

“You hid because you wanted to be loved.”

The tears I had held back for months finally appeared.

“I thought if Adrian knew who I was, he would only see the money.”

My father sat beside me.

“And instead?”

I swallowed.

“He saw the moment he thought I had nothing.”

My father looked down.

The pain in his expression was obvious.

“I should have known.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“This wasn’t your fault.”

But my father did not accept that.

“I spent years building a company that could protect thousands of people.”

He looked at me.

“And I failed to protect my own daughter.”

The room became silent.

I reached for his hand.

“You came.”

That was all that mattered.

He squeezed my fingers.

“I almost didn’t.”

I froze.

“What?”

My father looked toward the window.

“I received a message three days ago.”

My heartbeat changed.

“What kind of message?”

He hesitated.

“A warning.”

The word sent a chill through me.

“From who?”

“I don’t know.”

My father rarely admitted uncertainty.

That frightened me more than anything.

“What did it say?”

He reached into his coat pocket and removed his phone.

He opened an encrypted message.

Then he handed it to me.

The message was short.

Your daughter is in danger. The Cross family is planning something bigger than you know. If you want to save Elena, stop looking at Adrian. Look at the people behind him.

I read it twice.

Then again.

“Who sent this?”

“My security team has been investigating.”

“And?”

My father’s expression darkened.

“They found something disturbing.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Adrian Cross was never the real person controlling everything.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?”

My father stood and walked toward the window.

“Cross Properties was already failing before Adrian married you.”

“That’s impossible.”

Everyone believed Adrian was a genius.

A self-made billionaire.

A man who built everything himself.

My father shook his head.

“He was talented. But he was also reckless.”

“Then how did he survive?”

My father turned back.

“Someone invested in him.”

“Who?”

A pause.

Then he answered.

“Someone who did not want their name known.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Margaret?”

My father nodded slowly.

“Partly.”

“Partly?”

“She had support.”

I thought about Margaret.

Her calm expression.

Her perfect manners.

Her ability to manipulate every situation.

She was dangerous.

But who was more dangerous than her?

My father opened another file.

“This arrived this morning.”

Inside were photographs.

My blood ran cold.

The first image showed Adrian meeting a man outside a private club.

The second showed Margaret shaking hands with the same person.

The third showed that person entering a building owned by a company I recognized.

Whitmore Capital.

I looked at my father.

“What is this?”

He did not answer immediately.

And that scared me.

“Dad.”

His jaw tightened.

“That man is Daniel Vale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But my father reacted as if I should know it.

“Who is he?”

My father sat down again.

“Years ago, Daniel was my business partner.”

I stared at him.

“You never told me you had partners.”

“There are many things I never told you.”

The sadness in his voice was unexpected.

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to keep you away from this world.”

I looked at the pictures again.

“But this world found me anyway.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Then my father said something that changed everything.

“Daniel Vale believes Whitmore Capital should have belonged to him.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“When your grandfather died, there were disagreements over the future of the company.”

“And Daniel lost?”

“Yes.”

My father’s voice became colder.

“He never forgave me.”

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Are you saying Adrian married me because of my family?”

My father did not answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

I felt sick.

For two years, I believed Adrian had chosen me because I was different.

Because I was quiet.

Because I made him feel loved.

But what if every moment had been calculated?

What if I was never the target because I was Elena Hart?

What if I was the target because I was Elena Whitmore?

My father reached for the folder.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

He placed another document in front of me.

It was a marriage investigation report.

My name was written at the top.

Subject: Elena Whitmore.

Below it were details of my life.

My childhood.

My education.

My friendships.

Everything.

Someone had been watching me long before Adrian proposed.

My hands began shaking.

“Who created this?”

My father looked at me.

“We are still finding out.”

Then his phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Yes?”

His expression changed.

The color disappeared from his face.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Are you sure?”

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“What is it?”

He looked at me.

“Elena…”

His voice was different.

More serious than before.

“Adrian was released.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He posted bail.”

“How?”

My father looked toward the documents.

“Because someone powerful helped him.”

My heart sank.

“Daniel Vale?”

My father nodded.

“And he left one message.”

“What message?”

My father looked directly into my eyes.

“He said…”

A pause.

“Tell Elena the real battle has not started yet.”

The room felt colder.

Two years ago, I thought I had married the wrong man.

Last night, I thought I had escaped him.

But now I understood.

Adrian Cross was only one piece of something much larger.

And whoever was behind him…

May you like

Had been waiting for me to discover the truth.

To be continued…
