Chapter 13: The Choice That Changed Everything

The call ended.
But Daniel Vale’s words remained.
You have to make the same choice.
I stood there holding the phone, unable to move.
Everyone in the room was watching me.
My father.
My mother.
Adrian.
Margaret.
Four people who had spent years connected by secrets and betrayal.
And somehow, the final decision had fallen onto me.
“What does he mean?”
My father’s voice was tense.
My mother looked terrified.
Because she understood.
She knew exactly what Daniel was talking about.
“Mom?”
She looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was afraid this day would come.”
“Afraid of what?”
She sat down slowly.
“The night of the accident wasn’t just about the recording.”
Everyone became silent.
“What else happened?”
My mother looked at my father.
“I found out Daniel had another plan.”
My father stepped closer.
“What plan?”
She took a deep breath.
“He wanted to destroy Whitmore Capital completely.”
“That was his goal?”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
My mother looked at me.
“Because he believed if he could erase the Whitmore family name, he could rebuild everything under his control.”
I shook my head.
“But the trust stopped him.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the old documents.
“The trust was designed to protect the company from someone like him.”
My father understood.
“That’s why he needed an heir.”
My mother nodded.
“Someone with the legal right to control the future of Whitmore Capital.”
My heart sank.
“And that person is me.”
“Yes.”
The room became quiet.
I looked at my father.
“I never wanted this.”
“I know.”
His answer was immediate.
“I know you never wanted any of it.”
That was the difference.
My father never forced power onto me.
He spent my entire life trying to keep me away from it.
Daniel wanted to use me.
My father wanted to protect me.
But now there was no escaping it.
My phone buzzed again.
A message.
From Daniel.
Midnight. Whitmore Tower. Come alone.
My father saw the screen.
“No.”
His answer was instant.
I looked at him.
“Dad.”
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“He has been planning this for twenty years. You are not walking into his trap.”
“But if I don’t go?”
My mother looked down.
Because we all knew.
Daniel would keep coming.
He had already destroyed too much.
My father stepped closer.
“We find another way.”
I shook my head.
“There may not be another way.”
“Elena.”
I looked at him.
“For two years, Adrian controlled me because he convinced me I had no power.”
A pause.
“I spent all that time trying to escape.”
I looked at my family.
“But now I finally understand.”
My voice became stronger.
“I do have power.”
Nobody spoke.
“And I’m done letting other people decide what happens to me.”
My father looked at me.
Pride and fear mixed in his expression.
“You sound like your mother.”
My mother smiled sadly.
“She always was.”
Two hours later, Whitmore Tower stood against the Chicago skyline.
The same building where my father had built his empire.
The same building Daniel wanted to take.
The same place where everything would end.
I entered through the main doors.
Security followed at a distance.
My father wanted to come.
I refused.
Not because I wanted to be alone.
Because I needed Daniel to believe he still had control.
The elevator doors opened.
The top floor was empty.
Too empty.
The lights were dim.
A single figure stood near the windows.
Daniel Vale.
Older than the photographs.
But exactly how I imagined him.
Cold.
Calm.
Certain.
“You came.”
I stopped several feet away.
“You knew I would.”
He smiled.
“You really are your mother’s daughter.”
I hated how he said it.
Like it was a compliment.
Like he had the right.
“You destroyed my family.”
Daniel turned toward the city.
“No.”
He smiled.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
“You manipulated everyone.”
“People are easy to manipulate when they want something.”
I stared at him.
“What did Alexander want?”
“Recognition.”
“What did Adrian want?”
“Power.”
“And Margaret?”
Daniel smiled.
“Security.”
He looked at me.
“Everyone had a weakness.”
“And you?”
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I had patience.”
The arrogance was unbelievable.
“You spent twenty years doing this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because your grandfather chose Victor.”
A pause.
“Because your mother exposed me.”
Another pause.
“Because your father took everything that should have been mine.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
His eyes narrowed.
“No?”
“You lost because you thought everything belonged to you.”
The room became silent.
“You don’t want justice.”
I stepped closer.
“You want ownership.”
Daniel smiled.
“That’s exactly why you are dangerous.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“You see people clearly.”
He walked toward a desk.
“But you still have one weakness.”
“What weakness?”
He placed a folder on the table.
“Your family.”
I stared at it.
Inside were photographs.
My mother.
My father.
Me.
From different moments of our lives.
He had been watching us.
Studying us.
“You are sick.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I am prepared.”
He opened another file.
Inside was a legal document.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?”
“The final transfer agreement.”
I looked closer.
My name was there.
Elena Whitmore.
The heir of Whitmore Capital.
Daniel continued.
“Sign this, and the company becomes protected.”
I laughed.
“Protected?”
“Yes.”
“You mean controlled.”
His smile disappeared.
“Be careful.”
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“You spent twenty years thinking you were smarter than everyone.”
I looked at the document.
“But you made the same mistake Adrian made.”
Daniel stared.
“What mistake?”
“You thought I was powerless.”
The elevator doors suddenly opened.
Daniel turned.
His expression changed.
Because standing there was someone he never expected.
Adrian.
Behind him…
My father.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“How?”
My father walked forward.
“You forgot one thing.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
My father smiled slightly.
“You taught my daughter to recognize manipulation.”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“For years, you told me Victor was the enemy.”
His voice was full of anger.
“You lied to me.”
Daniel remained calm.
“You’re emotional.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“I’m finally awake.”
The room became tense.
Three enemies.
Three truths.
One final confrontation.
Daniel slowly reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
My father stepped forward.
“Daniel.”
But Daniel did not pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
The final recording.
“I knew you would come.”
My mother’s voice suddenly filled the room.
Everyone froze.
Daniel smiled.
“Your mother left one last message.”
He pressed play.
And her voice began.
“If you are hearing this…”
A pause.
“Daniel has failed.”
My heart stopped.
Because my mother’s message was not meant for Daniel.
May you like
It was meant for me.
To be continued…
