Chapter 3: The Man Behind Adrian Cross

By noon, the entire country knew about Adrian Cross.
The headlines were everywhere.

The same newspapers that once called him a visionary now questioned every part of his empire.
The charity photos.
The interviews.
The speeches about family values.
The carefully designed image of a generous businessman.
All of it was beginning to fall apart.
But I knew something the public did not.
Adrian was not the biggest threat.
He was just the man standing in front of the storm.
I sat in my father’s private office overlooking downtown Chicago.
It was the first time I had ever been inside Whitmore Capital’s headquarters.
I had grown up knowing my father was successful.
But I never understood the scale of his world.
Floor after floor of glass walls.
Executives walking quickly through expensive offices.
Security teams monitoring every entrance.
A company built on power and influence.
And yet, despite everything around me…
I felt strangely small.
Because for the first time, I was seeing the world Adrian had always feared.
My world.
“Your meeting starts in ten minutes.”
I looked up.
My father’s assistant, Claire, stood near the door.
She was a woman in her forties with sharp eyes and a calm personality.
“I’m not attending a meeting,” I said.
She smiled slightly.
“Yes, you are.”
I looked at my father.
He was standing near the window, reading documents.
“I thought I was here to recover.”
“You are.”
He placed the papers down.
“But you also need to know what is happening.”
I hesitated.
“Dad, I don’t want to become like you.”
For a moment, he looked surprised.
Then he understood.
“You think protecting yourself means becoming ruthless.”
I looked away.
“Adrian started as someone everyone respected.”
My father walked toward me.
“Elena, power does not change people.”
He paused.
“It reveals them.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because Adrian had not become cruel because he became powerful.
He became cruel when he believed nobody could stop him.
A knock interrupted us.
Claire entered.
“Mr. Whitmore, the board is ready.”
My father looked at me.
“Come with me.”
The boardroom was larger than any room I had ever entered.
Twelve executives sat around a long black table.
Every person stood when my father walked in.
Then their eyes moved to me.
I expected judgment.
Instead, I saw concern.
Respect.
One woman near the end of the table stood.
“Ms. Whitmore.”
I recognized her.
“Rachel?”
Rachel Bennett had been my childhood neighbor.
The daughter of one of my father’s oldest friends.
I had not seen her in years.
She smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry you went through this.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
My father took his seat.
“Elena will be joining us because the matter involving Cross Properties directly affects her.”
A man across the table opened a folder.
“Adrian Cross has lost significant investor support overnight.”
“How much?” my father asked.
“Almost forty percent of his private funding.”
Another executive spoke.
“But there is a problem.”
My father looked up.
“What problem?”
“The company structure.”
The executive pushed a document forward.
“Someone placed emergency protections around Cross Properties six months ago.”
I frowned.
“What kind of protections?”
“Financial safeguards.”
My father studied the document.
“Who approved them?”
The room became quiet.
Then the executive answered.
“Daniel Vale.”
The name appeared again.
My father’s expression hardened.
“He had access?”
“Not officially.”
“Then how?”
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question everyone feared.
How had Daniel Vale entered Adrian’s company without anyone noticing?
I looked at my father.
“Who exactly is Daniel Vale?”
This time, he answered.
“He was my closest friend.”
The room went silent.
“Before Adrian?”
“Yes.”
My father looked at the city outside.
“Before Whitmore Capital became what it is today.”
He took a breath.
“Daniel and I built the company together.”
I listened carefully.
“He was brilliant. Ambitious. Charismatic.”
“Like Adrian.”
My father nodded.
“Exactly like Adrian.”
That comparison bothered me.
“What happened?”
My father’s face changed.
“Daniel wanted control.”
“And you refused?”
“I stopped him.”
The room remained silent.
“He tried to manipulate investors. He moved money without permission. He believed the company belonged to whoever was strong enough to take it.”
“And you removed him.”
“Yes.”
I looked down.
“And now he’s back.”
My father nodded.
“Through Adrian.”
The pieces began connecting.
Adrian’s sudden success.
The marriage.
The hidden documents.
The attempt to control my child.
This was never just about money.
It was revenge.
Daniel Vale had spent years planning his return.
And I was the key.
A phone suddenly rang.
One of the executives answered.
His face changed immediately.
“Mr. Whitmore…”
My father looked at him.
“What?”
The man slowly lowered the phone.
“There has been a leak.”
My stomach tightened.
“What leak?”
He looked at me.
“Your identity.”
The room froze.
“What?”
“The media has discovered Elena Hart is actually Elena Whitmore.”
My father closed his eyes.
“How?”
The executive hesitated.
“We believe the information came from inside.”
A terrible feeling moved through me.
“Adrian.”
Everyone looked at me.
“He wants the world to know.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“Then who?”
Before he could answer, every screen in the boardroom suddenly turned on.
A live news broadcast appeared.
The anchor looked serious.
“Breaking news. Sources have revealed that Elena Whitmore, daughter of billionaire investor Victor Whitmore, secretly married controversial developer Adrian Cross under a false identity.”
My heart sank.
The anchor continued.
“Questions are now being raised about whether the marriage was connected to a larger financial scheme.”
I felt sick.
They were twisting the truth.
Making me look like the villain.
Like I had hidden my identity to manipulate Adrian.
My father immediately stood.
“This is what Daniel wanted.”
“To destroy me?”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“To make you look guilty.”
The broadcast continued.
A photograph appeared.
It was me.
Standing beside Adrian on our wedding day.
The happiest day of my life.
A day I once believed was the beginning of forever.
The headline appeared beneath it.
BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS HIDES IDENTITY DURING MARRIAGE TO BUSINESS TYCOON
I felt tears forming.
Not because the world misunderstood me.
Because Adrian knew exactly what they would do.
He knew my greatest fear.
That people would believe I was just another rich woman playing games.
My father came beside me.
“Elena.”
I looked at him.
“I want to go home.”
His expression softened.
“Are you sure?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Because I finally understood something.
Running away had protected me for two years.
But now?
Now I had to fight.
My father reached for his coat.
“Then we go home.”
As we left the boardroom, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
You still think Adrian is your enemy.
You are wrong.
Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.
I stopped walking.
My father noticed.
“Elena?”
I slowly looked up.
For the first time since he arrived…
My father looked afraid.
And I realized the secret behind this war was not just Adrian.
Not just Daniel Vale.
It was something buried in my own family.
May you like
Something my father had hidden from me my entire life.
To be continued…
