Chapter 5: The Betrayal Inside My Own Family

I stared at the signature on the document.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

But the name did not change.

The ink did not disappear.

The truth remained exactly where it was.

Alexander Whitmore.

My uncle.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who had attended every family birthday.

The man who held me at my mother’s funeral.

The man who told me I would always be protected.

My hands went numb.

“No.”

The word escaped before I even realized I had spoken.

My father did not look surprised.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“You knew?”

His silence answered me.

I looked at him.

“You knew my uncle was involved?”

My father’s eyes lowered.

“Not until today.”

“But you suspected.”

Another silence.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Dad.”

He finally looked at me.

“I suspected there was someone inside the family.”

The pain in his voice was obvious.

“But I never wanted to believe it was him.”

I picked up the document.

The pages shook in my hands.

At the top was a detailed plan.

A strategy created years before Adrian entered my life.

A strategy designed to weaken Whitmore Capital.

To control the company.

To destroy my father’s reputation.

And at the center of it all…

Me.

Target: Elena Whitmore.

I felt sick.

“They planned this before Adrian met me.”

My father nodded.

“Yes.”

“So my marriage…”

His expression changed.

“It was arranged.”

Not arranged like a traditional marriage.

Something much darker.

A business operation.

A carefully planned attack.

I looked at the names again.

Adrian Cross.

Margaret Cross.

Daniel Vale.

Alexander Whitmore.

Four people.

One goal.

My family’s empire.

My life.

My child.

Everything.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not fear.

Something else.

Betrayal.

The deepest kind.

Because strangers can hurt you.

But family knows exactly where to cut.

“Why me?”

My father looked at me.

“Because you were the only person who could inherit everything.”

I shook my head.

“I never wanted the company.”

“I know.”

“That’s why I left.”

My voice became quiet.

“I wanted a normal life.”

My father stepped closer.

“And that is exactly why they chose you.”

I looked confused.

“They thought you were the easiest person to control.”

The words hurt.

But this time, they did not break me.

Because I understood something.

They did not underestimate me because I was weak.

They underestimated me because I refused to become like them.

Claire looked through the remaining files.

“There is more.”

My father turned.

“What?”

She placed another folder on the table.

“This concerns Adrian Cross’s marriage proposal.”

I opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Messages.

Private communications.

Then I saw something that made my stomach drop.

A payment.

From Daniel Vale.

To Adrian Cross.

The amount?

Five million dollars.

The date?

Three days before Adrian proposed to me.

My hands tightened around the paper.

“He was paid to marry me.”

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was finally undeniable.

The man who promised me forever had been hired to destroy me.

I remembered that night.

The restaurant.

The candles.

The way Adrian looked into my eyes.

“I have never met anyone like you, Elena.”

“I want to build a future with you.”

“I don’t care about money.”

I almost laughed.

Because every word had been a lie.

My father watched me carefully.

“Elena.”

I looked up.

“I’m okay.”

But I wasn’t.

Not completely.

Something inside me had changed.

The woman who entered Adrian’s mansion two years ago believed love could fix anything.

The woman sitting in that office now knew some people used love as a weapon.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

My father immediately looked concerned.

“Don’t answer.”

But I already had.

“Hello?”

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice.

“Hello, Elena.”

My blood turned cold.

“Adrian.”

My father immediately moved closer.

The call was on speaker.

Adrian laughed softly.

“I knew your father would find out eventually.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You really thought I was stupid?”

My jaw tightened.

“You threatened me.”

“I protected myself.”

“You tried to take my child.”

“I tried to secure my future.”

The cruelty of his words was unbelievable.

“You married me for money.”

“No.”

A pause.

“I married you because you were the key.”

The room became silent.

My father’s expression darkened.

“The key to what?”

Adrian laughed.

“You really never told her?”

My father froze.

My heart dropped.

“Told me what?”

Adrian continued.

“Your father is not the only one hiding secrets, Elena.”

I looked at my father.

“What is he talking about?”

Adrian ignored me.

“Ask him about the night your mother disappeared.”

My father’s face changed.

“Adrian.”

But Adrian continued.

“Ask him why your mother trusted Daniel Vale more than she trusted Victor Whitmore.”

I felt confused.

“What are you talking about?”

The line remained silent for a moment.

Then Adrian said:

“Your father wants you to believe he saved you.”

A pause.

“But maybe he was the reason you needed saving.”

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my father.

And for the first time since he walked through that mansion door…

A small doubt entered my heart.

Not because I believed Adrian.

But because Adrian knew something.

Something about my family.

Something my father still had not told me.

“Dad…”

My voice was quiet.

“Is there anything else?”

My father looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

There was.

A secret bigger than my mother.

Bigger than Adrian.

Bigger than Daniel Vale.

My father finally spoke.

“Yes.”

His voice was almost a whisper.

“There is one thing I never told you.”

I waited.

“When your mother survived the accident…”

My heart stopped.

“She did not disappear.”

I held my breath.

“Someone took her.”

The room went completely silent.

“Who?”

My father looked at the photograph of my mother.

Then at me.

“The same person who has been controlling Adrian Cross from the beginning.”

I felt cold.

“Daniel Vale?”

My father nodded.

“But that is not the worst part.”

I stared at him.

“What could be worse?”

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Your mother left behind evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“A recording.”

“Of what?”

He looked at me.

“A recording that proves who really caused the accident.”

I swallowed.

“And where is it?”

My father’s voice became quiet.

“Adrian has it.”

My heart stopped.

The man who destroyed my marriage…

The man who threatened my child…

Was holding the one thing that could reveal the truth about my mother.

And suddenly, I understood.

Adrian Cross had never been trying to escape.

He wanted me to come after him.

Because he knew something I needed.

May you like

Something worth destroying an entire empire for.

To be continued…
