Chapter 10 — OPERATION NIGHTFALL

Deep beneath the Appalachian Mountains, hidden miles away from civilian infrastructure, lay the Alpha Bunker.
It was an impenetrable fortress of steel and reinforced concrete, designed to withstand a nuclear blast. Now, it served as a temporary home for Rachel and Lucy.
Rachel sat at a large oak table in the bunker's central command room. Lucy was safely tucked into bed in the adjacent quarters, watched over by a female medic and a heavily armed guard. Rachel had showered, changed into a comfortable oversized sweater and sweatpants, but the exhaustion in her eyes was profound.
The heavy blast doors opened, and Thomas walked in, followed by Frank. Frank looked battered; his tactical vest was scuffed, and he had a bandage over his left eyebrow, remnants of the highway chase where they had apprehended Captain William Vance.
"Dad," Rachel stood up, rushing into his arms.
"I'm here, sweetheart. You're safe," Thomas held her tightly, kissing the top of her head.
"Did you get him?" she asked, looking at Frank.
Frank nodded grimly. "We captured Vance. He crashed his vehicle trying to ram through our barricade. He's singing like a bird. Combined with the confession we just extracted from Ethan, we have the entire picture."
Thomas pulled out a map and spread it across the oak table. He placed several markers down.
"The Obsidian Group isn't a government; they are an international syndicate of arms dealers," Thomas explained, his tone shifting into full commander mode. "Ethan was supposed to deliver the final decryption key for the Aegis blueprints to their top operative, The Architect, tonight."
"But Ethan is locked up," Rachel said. "They know you have him. Won't they run?"
"They will try," Frank said. "But they don't know that Ethan gave up the location of the drop point. A derelict shipping yard down at the Baltimore docks. The Architect is scheduled to be there at 0500 hours to extract his remaining assets before skipping the country."
Rachel looked at the map, her brow furrowing. A memory sparked in her mind.
"Wait," she whispered, stepping closer to the table. "The final decryption key... Ethan said he hid it somewhere they wouldn't look if our house was raided."
Thomas and Frank stopped, looking at her intently. "Did he say where?" Thomas asked.
Rachel closed her eyes, thinking back to the terror in the living room. "He didn't have a flash drive on him when he attacked me. He only had that red folder. But earlier today, before the storm started... I saw him in Lucy's room."
Rachel’s eyes snapped open. "The dollhouse. He was messing with the wooden roof of Lucy's antique dollhouse. I asked him what he was doing, and he snapped at me, told me to get out."
Thomas immediately tapped his radio. "Miller. Take a team to the Mercer estate. Tear apart the child's dollhouse. Look for a micro-SD card or a hidden drive. Do it now."
"Copy that, Admiral."
Ten minutes later, the radio crackled to life.
"Admiral, this is Miller. Jackpot. We found a biometric flash drive hollowed out inside the wooden chimney."
Thomas allowed a rare, grim smile to touch his lips. He looked at Frank.
"We have the key. We have their location. And they have no idea we are coming," Thomas said. He turned to the tactical officers standing by the bunker doors.
"Initiate Operation Nightfall. Spool up the Blackhawk helicopters. Deploy Alpha and Bravo teams to the Baltimore docks. Lethal force is authorized."
Thomas looked at Rachel, his eyes softening just for a moment. "I have to go finish this, Rachel. I have to protect you and my grandchild."
"Come back to us," Rachel said, squeezing his hand.

Thomas put his officer's cap on, his silhouette imposing and resolute.
"I always do."
