Chapter 3 — EXTRACTION AND ECHOES

The flashing red and blue lights of the armored tactical vehicles sliced through the torrential rain, illuminating the long, winding driveway of the Mercer estate.

Inside the mobile command unit, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Rachel lay on a specialized medical cot, an IV line securely taped to her arm. A military trauma nurse was diligently monitoring her vitals and the fetal heartbeat.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

The steady, rhythmic sound of the baby's heartbeat echoed through the small cabin, a beacon of hope against the night's horrors. Rachel exhaled a long, shaky breath, her hand resting on her swollen stomach. Lucy was curled up in a heated blanket next to her, fast asleep, exhausted by the sheer terror of the evening.

Thomas sat across from them, watching his daughter's chest rise and fall. He had spent his life orchestrating war games and defending the nation, yet nothing had prepared him for the sight of his own child battered and broken by the man sworn to protect her.

Frank stepped into the rear compartment, shaking the rain from his dark hair. He handed a secure tablet to Thomas.

"We processed the recording device Rachel handed over, Admiral," Frank said, his tone gravely professional.

Evidence Log: Audio File A-01

Duration: 14 minutes, 32 seconds

Subject: Ethan Mercer

Status: Highly Classified

"Play it," Thomas commanded.

Frank tapped the screen. The small speakers crackled to life.

[Audio playback begins. The sound of heavy footsteps on hardwood.]
Ethan: "You think your father is untouchable, Rachel? You think his stars and his medals mean anything in the real world?"
Rachel: "Please, Ethan. Stop. You're scaring Lucy."
Ethan: "Let her watch! Let her see how the real world works. I've already copied the files, Rachel. The defense contracts, the offshore routing numbers. If your father tries to interfere with my business, I will leak the Aegis protocols to the highest bidder, and I'll frame you for the theft. Who do you think they'll believe? The brilliant financier, or the unstable, hormonal housewife?"
[Sound of glass shattering. A sharp gasp from Rachel.]
Ethan: "Your father can't save you."

Thomas’s jaw tightened so fiercely a muscle ticked in his cheek. He handed the tablet back to Frank, his eyes burning with a cold, calculated fury. Ethan had not just been abusing Rachel; he had been using her access to Thomas's home office to commit treason, holding her hostage with the threat of global exposure and federal prison.

"Admiral," Frank said softly. "The local authorities are buzzing. Ethan's legal team is already making calls to a judge, trying to claim we abducted a citizen. They are threatening to file a kidnapping charge regarding Lucy."

"Let them try," Thomas replied, his voice like grinding steel. "Initiate Protocol Vanguard. Lock down the military hospital at the base. No one gets in or out without my direct authorization. We are going to war."
