Chapter 6 — THE BLACK SITE

The air inside the interrogation room was deliberately kept at a freezing fifty-five degrees. There were no windows, no clocks, and no cameras visible to the naked eye. The walls were constructed of soundproof concrete, painted a dull, lifeless gray. A single steel table was bolted to the floor, and in the center of the room sat Ethan Mercer.

He was no longer the immaculate, arrogant investment banker who had terrorized his pregnant wife in their multimillion-dollar mansion.

His designer suit was gone, replaced by standard-issue orange detention scrubs. His hands were bound in heavy iron cuffs, attached to a chain bolted to the floor. The bruise on his jaw from where Admiral Thomas Hale had taken him down was blooming into a vivid purple. He was shivering, though whether from the biting cold of the room or the dawning realization of his predicament, it was difficult to tell.

The heavy steel door unlocked with a loud, mechanical CLANG.

Ethan’s head snapped up.

Admiral Thomas Hale walked into the room, followed closely by Frank Dawson. Thomas had not changed out of his dress uniform. The white fabric and the gold four-star insignia gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, a stark reminder of exactly who was in charge.

Thomas pulled out the metal chair opposite Ethan. He didn’t sit. He merely rested his large, calloused hands on the back of it, staring down at his son-in-law.

"I know my rights," Ethan croaked, though his voice lacked its usual venom. "I am an American citizen. You can't hold me here. My lawyers—"

"Your lawyers abandoned you three hours ago," Thomas cut him off, his voice flat, devoid of any emotion. "Marcus Vance walked out of the Naval Medical Center and immediately filed the paperwork to distance his firm from you. You have no lawyers, Ethan. You have no phone calls. You do not exist in any civilian system."

Ethan swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat. "This is illegal."

"What is illegal," Frank Dawson interjected, stepping up beside the Admiral, "is accessing secure Department of Defense servers. What is illegal is copying the architectural vulnerabilities of the Aegis Defense Shield. What is illegal is negotiating the sale of those vulnerabilities to foreign entities."

Frank tossed a thick file onto the metal table. The sound echoed like a gunshot.

"We decrypted your hard drives, Ethan," Thomas said smoothly, finally pulling the chair out and sitting down. He folded his hands on the table. "You thought you were clever, using offshore routing networks and anonymous crypto wallets. But you are a banker, not a spy. You left digital footprints everywhere."

Ethan’s eyes darted between Thomas and the file. The bravado was entirely stripped away, leaving only a desperate, cornered animal.

"You don't understand," Ethan whispered, leaning forward, his chains rattling. "You don't know who you are dealing with, Thomas. The people buying that information... they aren't just foreign governments. They have unlimited resources. If I don't deliver, they will kill me. They will kill Rachel. They will kill Lucy."

Thomas’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Do not speak my daughter's name. You lost that privilege when you put your hands on her."

"I was trying to protect her!" Ethan pleaded, tears of pure panic welling in his eyes. "I got in too deep! The investment firm took a massive hit last year. I was bleeding money. A man approached me. He knew everything about my finances. He offered to wipe my debts clean if I just gave them access to your network. They said no one would get hurt!"

"Who?" Thomas demanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying register.

Ethan shook his head frantically. "I don't know his real name. He goes by 'The Architect.' But Thomas, listen to me... you think you're safe because I'm locked up here? You're not. They didn't just recruit me."

Thomas and Frank exchanged a micro-glance.

"What does that mean?" Frank asked sharply.

Ethan let out a broken, humorless laugh. "It means I wasn't the only one on your payroll they bought. The Architect knew your emergency protocols. He knew the patrol schedules around your estate. He knows exactly where Rachel is right now."

Thomas stood up slowly, the chair scraping against the concrete. The blood ran cold in his veins.

"Frank," Thomas ordered, never breaking eye contact with Ethan. "Call the hospital. Now."
