Chapter 17 — GHOSTS IN THE LIGHT

The National Building Museum in Washington D.C. was a monument to American grandeur. Massive Corinthian columns stretched up to a soaring ceiling, and the Great Hall was bathed in the warm, golden glow of thousands of crystal lights.

It was the night of the Naval Heritage Gala. The room was a sea of glittering evening gowns and sharp, medal-adorned dress uniforms.

Rachel stood near the VIP tables, looking breathtaking in a floor-length, midnight-blue gown. She held little Leo in a tailored baby carrier strapped securely to her chest, while Lucy, dressed in a beautiful white dress, held tightly to her mother's hand.

Despite the elegant atmosphere, Rachel’s eyes were constantly moving. She was scanning the exits, reading the body language of the waitstaff, and tracking the heavy, concealed presence of her father's elite SEAL team, who were dressed in black tuxedos, blending seamlessly into the crowd.

"You look beautiful, sweetheart," Thomas said, approaching her. He was wearing his full dress whites, the stars on his shoulders gleaming.

"And you look like a man who is about to give a very long speech," Rachel teased gently, adjusting the collar of his uniform.

"Hopefully not too long," Thomas smiled. "Frank has the perimeter locked down tight. We have snipers on the roof, and Secret Service covering the main entrances. We are secure."

Rachel nodded, but a cold prickle of unease washed over the back of her neck.

Across the Great Hall, a team of caterers wheeled in massive, towering carts of champagne and hors d'oeuvres. They wore immaculate white jackets and moved with precise, practiced efficiency.

Rachel watched one of the waiters carefully. He was pouring a glass of champagne for a nearby General, but his eyes weren't on the glass. His eyes were sweeping the ceiling, specifically mapping the locations of the security cameras.

Then, Rachel noticed his hands.

They weren't the soft, manicured hands of a hospitality worker. His knuckles were heavily calloused, and a thick, jagged scar ran down his left wrist—a scar that looked exactly like a combat knife burn.

Rachel’s heart skipped a beat. She subtly shifted her weight, moving Lucy closer to the heavy marble pillar behind them.

"Dad," Rachel whispered, not taking her eyes off the waiter. "The catering staff near the east exit. The one pouring the champagne."

Thomas didn't turn his head immediately. He casually took a sip of his water, using the reflection in a nearby decorative mirror to track Rachel's line of sight.

"I see him," Thomas murmured, his voice instantly dropping to a lethal calm. He tapped the hidden comms unit in his ear. "Frank. Verify the identities of the east exit catering crew."

Static.

Thomas frowned, tapping the earpiece again. "Frank, report."

Nothing but dead air.

At that exact moment, Silas Thorne stood on the roof of a high-rise building three blocks away, looking through the scope of a high-powered surveillance drone.

"Initiate Eclipse," Silas ordered into his radio.

Inside the Great Hall, the waiter Rachel had spotted reached under the champagne cart. He didn't pull out a bottle. He pulled out a sleek, rectangular device and slammed his palm onto the red button in the center.

A localized Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) detonated.

Every light in the National Building Museum instantly blew out. The massive chandeliers went black. The security cameras died. The electronic locks on the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, sealing the room.

The Great Hall plunged into absolute, terrifying darkness.

Panic erupted. Screams echoed through the cavernous space as guests blindly knocked over tables and chairs.

"Get down!" Thomas roared over the chaos, drawing a concealed sidearm from his tuxedo jacket.

Rachel didn't freeze. Her training with Frank took over instantly. She dropped to her knees, dragging Lucy under the heavy, reinforced oak table. She curled her body over Leo, shielding him completely.

In the pitch black, the distinct, terrifying sound of automatic weapons racking their bolts echoed through the room.

The caterers weren't caterers. They were 'Wraiths'—Silas Thorne’s elite kill squad. And they had night-vision goggles.

Pffft! Pffft! Pffft!

Suppressed gunfire began tearing through the room. They weren't shooting wildly; they were executing surgical strikes, taking out the visible Secret Service agents one by one.

"Admiral Hale is the primary!" a voice barked in the darkness. "Find him!"

Thomas returned fire, the muzzle flash of his pistol illuminating the chaos for split seconds at a time. He dropped a Wraith with a perfect headshot, but there were too many.

Rachel crouched beneath the table. She could hear the heavy combat boots of a Wraith advancing slowly toward their position, hunting the sound of Lucy's frightened whimpers.

She felt the cold steel of the heavy steak knife she had discreetly slipped from the table before the lights went out.

She wasn't going to wait to be rescued.
