Chapter 4 — PROTOCOL VANGUARD

The Naval Medical Center was a fortress of concrete and steel, heavily guarded by armed sentries. By 3:00 AM, the storm outside had lessened to a steady drizzle, but inside the hospital’s VIP secure wing, the storm was just beginning.

Rachel sat up in the pristine hospital bed, wearing soft cotton scrubs. The scratches on her arms had been cleaned and bandaged. The sharp pain in her stomach had subsided, replaced by a dull ache of exhaustion. The obstetrician had confirmed that while she had suffered a severe contusion, the placenta was intact, and the baby was safe.

Lucy was asleep on the sofa across the room, guarded by two elite Navy SEALs stationed outside the door.

Thomas sat beside Rachel's bed, holding her hand.

"Why didn't you tell me, Rach?" Thomas asked gently, tracing the bandaged knuckles of his daughter. "Why did you carry this alone?"

Rachel looked down, tears welling in her eyes. "He was so charming at first, Dad. You remember. But after we got married... the control started. It was small things. My phone. My friends. Then, when he realized who you really were, what kind of access you had, he changed."

She took a shaky breath.

"He told me that if I ever left him, he would take Lucy away. He had the money, the connections, the judges in his pocket. He said he would ruin your career and lock me away. I was so scared. I started recording him in secret, hiding the files. I was waiting for a chance, but tonight... tonight he found out I was going into your study."

Thomas leaned forward, kissing her forehead.

"Do you remember what I told you when you were nine years old, when you got lost in the woods behind our cabin?"

Rachel offered a weak, tearful smile. "You gave me that old silver whistle. You told me that no matter where I was, no matter how dark it got, if I sounded the alarm, you would find me."

"The emergency code," Thomas nodded. "When I got your encrypted text with the codeword Silver Whistle, I didn't ask questions. I didn't hesitate. I deployed."

Suddenly, the heavy metal door swung open. Frank entered, looking grim. He was holding a stack of legal documents.

"Admiral, we have a situation," Frank said, casting a sympathetic look at Rachel. "Ethan's attorney, Marcus Vance, just showed up at the front gate. He has a federal injunction signed by a civilian judge. They are demanding immediate custody of Lucy, claiming Rachel is mentally unfit and kidnapped the child across state lines."

Rachel gripped her father's hand tightly, panic flaring in her chest. "Dad, no. They can't take her."

Thomas stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the hospital room. He carefully adjusted his uniform jacket.

"Rest, Rachel," Thomas said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I am going to have a word with Mr. Vance."
