Chapter 2 — THE RED FOLDER

The storm battered the towering glass windows of the Mercer estate, but inside the ruined living room, the silence was absolute. The only sound was the jagged, uneven breathing of Ethan Mercer, pinned firmly against the cold marble floor.
Admiral Thomas Hale did not raise his voice. He did not need to. His authority filled the room, suffocating the last remnants of Ethan’s false bravado.
Frank Dawson stepped forward, his soaked raincoat dripping onto the floor. He knelt beside the overturned chair, ignoring the shattered crystal and the dark pool of expensive bourbon. With gloved hands, he carefully retrieved the sealed red folder.
"Secure the suspect," Thomas ordered, his voice echoing with military precision.
Two tactical officers moved in instantly. They hoisted Ethan by his arms, their movements fluid, impersonal, and entirely devoid of sympathy.
"You can't do this!" Ethan sneered, though the tremor in his voice betrayed his panic. He thrashed against the officers’ iron grips. "This is my house! You have no jurisdiction here, Thomas! I'll call my lawyers. I'll have you court-martialed for breaking and entering!"
Thomas slowly turned his head. His cold, silver eyes locked onto Ethan.
"You lost the right to invoke the law the moment you laid hands on my daughter," Thomas said quietly. "And as for jurisdiction..."
He gestured toward the red folder in Frank’s hands.
"That folder contains classified Naval intelligence blueprints regarding the Aegis Defense Shield. Documents that you, a civilian investment banker, have no legal right to possess. That makes this a matter of national security. You aren't dealing with the local police, Ethan. You are dealing with the United States government."
Ethan’s face drained of all color. The arrogance vanished, replaced by the sheer, unadulterated terror of a man who realized he had miscalculated on a catastrophic scale.
Rachel sat on the floor, her arms wrapped fiercely around little Lucy. The five-year-old had buried her face in her mother’s chest, her small hands clutching the torn, blood-stained fabric of Rachel’s white maternity dress.
"Dad," Rachel’s voice cracked, the adrenaline finally giving way to the crushing weight of the trauma. A sharp pain pulsed across her lower abdomen, causing her to wince. She instinctively curled her body inward to protect her unborn child.
In a heartbeat, the four-star Admiral vanished, and the father took his place.
Thomas dropped to his knees, disregarding his pristine white dress uniform. He wrapped his strong arms around both Rachel and Lucy, pulling them into a fortress of safety. For the first time in five years, Rachel let herself break. She sobbed into her father's shoulder, the tears mixing with the rainwater on his uniform.
"I've got you, sweetheart. I'm right here," Thomas murmured, his hand gently stroking Lucy's hair while supporting Rachel's trembling back. "You're safe now. Both of you. The baby is going to be fine."

He looked up, locking eyes with Frank.
"Get the medic. Now."
