Chapter 8 — The Secret Hidden in My Name

The call ended before I could ask another question.

I stared at my phone, listening to the silence that followed.

Celeste Monroe.

The woman who had watched me suffer.

The woman who had laughed while Nathan humiliated me.

The woman who had helped convince the world that I was unstable.

She was now afraid.

And fear made people reveal things they had spent years hiding.

I walked back into my father’s office.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?”

I placed the phone on the desk.

“Celeste called.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“She contacted you?”

I nodded.

“She wants protection.”

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

I repeated her words.

“She said Nathan didn’t marry me for my father’s money.”

A pause.

“She said he needed me alive.”

The room became completely silent.

My father’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

As if he had just remembered something he hoped would never return.

“What is it?” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me more than anything.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“There are things about our family history that I never wanted you involved in.”

I felt a chill.

“What things?”

My father walked toward the window.

“When your mother was alive, our family controlled more than companies and investments.”

I listened carefully.

“We were connected to a private network of financial institutions and security organizations. Not officially. Not publicly. But we had influence.”

I frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because certain information was passed down through our family.”

Daniel opened another file.

Inside were old documents.

Older than anything I had seen before.

My father continued.

“Your mother discovered something years ago.”

“What?”

“A system.”

I stared at him.

“A system?”

“A hidden financial network used by powerful people to move money, hide ownership, and control companies without their names appearing anywhere.”

My eyes widened.

“And Nathan wanted access to that?”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

That answer surprised me.

“Then what?”

He looked directly at me.

“He wanted access to you.”

I felt confused.

“Why me?”

My father opened the old documents.

There was a family record.

My name.

My birth date.

And beside it…

A symbol.

A symbol I had never seen before.

“What is that?”

My father hesitated.

“It represents the Vale Legacy Trust.”

I frowned.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“Because you weren’t supposed to.”

The words felt heavy.

“What does it contain?”

My father looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

“Ownership records.”

“Of what?”

“Companies.”

“Which companies?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Thousands.”

The room felt smaller.

I stared at them.

“That’s impossible.”

“It sounds impossible,” my father said.

“But your grandfather created it decades ago.”

I slowly sat down.

All my life, I believed I was an ordinary woman.

Even with my father’s success, I never cared about wealth or power.

I wanted a normal life.

A normal marriage.

A normal family.

But Nathan had known.

He knew something I didn’t even know about myself.

“He married me because of the trust.”

My father nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he just ask?”

My father gave a bitter smile.

“Because people who want power rarely ask.”

“They take.”

The truth settled over me.

Nathan didn’t just betray my heart.

He targeted my identity.

He saw me as a key.

A password.

A doorway.

Not a person.

Then Daniel received another message.

He read it quickly.

“Celeste has agreed to meet.”

My father looked at him.

“Location?”

“A private hotel outside the city.”

My father stood.

“We go now.”

I followed him.

But before leaving, I looked once more at the documents.

The family symbol.

The hidden trust.

The secret my father had protected.

A secret Nathan had been trying to steal.

The hotel was almost empty when we arrived.

Daniel’s team secured the area before we entered.

Celeste was waiting in a private room.

But the woman sitting there looked nothing like the confident woman from Blackthorn Manor.

Her expensive dress was wrinkled.

Her makeup was faded.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

When she saw me, she immediately stood.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.”

I said nothing.

Because I did.

Celeste looked down.

“But if you want the truth, you need me alive.”

My father remained cold.

“You’re not in a position to make demands.”

She swallowed.

“I know.”

Then she reached into her bag.

And placed a small black notebook on the table.

Nathan’s handwriting covered the pages.

My heart tightened.

“What is this?”

Celeste looked at me.

“His plan.”

I opened it.

The first page contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.

Eleanor Vale must never discover who she really is.

I turned the page.

More notes.

More dates.

More plans.

Then I saw something that stopped me completely.

A date.

The date of my wedding.

Beside it was a sentence.

After marriage, remove Alexander Vale permanently.

I looked up.

“What does this mean?”

Celeste’s face became pale.

“It means Nathan was never planning to steal your father’s fortune.”

A pause.

“He was planning to destroy your entire family.”

The room went silent.

My father took the notebook.

His expression hardened.

Because even he had not expected this.

Celeste whispered:

“Nathan Ashford didn’t enter your life to take what you had.”

“He entered your life to make sure you never inherited it.”

And suddenly…

The war was no longer about my marriage.

May you like

It was about my family’s survival.

To be continued…
