Chapter 5 — The Marriage That Was Never Real

I spent the entire night staring at the documents my father had placed in front of me.

Every page revealed another piece of a puzzle I never knew existed.

Nathan Ashford had not simply fallen out of love.

He had not simply become arrogant after success.

His betrayal had started long before I ever discovered Celeste.

The truth was far worse.

He had a reason for choosing me.

And that reason had nothing to do with love.

I turned the page slowly.

There was a list of private investors.

Business connections.

Companies.

Names.

And at the top of the document was one phrase:

Project Vale Acquisition Strategy.

My stomach tightened.

“What is this?”

My father remained silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

“An investigation.”

“Into Nathan?”

He nodded.

“Before you met him.”

I looked at him in disbelief.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“You knew something was wrong and still let me marry him?”

My father’s expression changed.

Pain crossed his face.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Pain.

“I tried to stop you.”

I remembered.

The warnings.

The questions.

The conversations where my father asked me if I was certain about Nathan.

At the time, I thought he was being overly protective.

I thought he didn’t understand Nathan.

I thought he was judging him because he came from a different world.

I was wrong.

“You never told me everything.”

“No.”

“Why?”

My father looked down.

“Because you were in love.”

The words were quiet.

“And because I knew if I showed you every piece of information, you might believe I was trying to control your life.”

I said nothing.

Because he was right.

I would have defended Nathan.

I would have argued.

I would have said my father didn’t give him a chance.

I would have protected the man who was hurting me.

My father continued.

“The first time Nathan met you, he already knew your last name.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He knew exactly who Alexander Vale was.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“But he acted like he didn’t.”

“Yes.”

My father opened another file.

“He researched your family for months before your engagement.”

I stared at the information.

Dates.

Emails.

Background checks.

Nathan had been investigating me before he proposed.

Not because he wanted to understand me.

Because he wanted access.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

My father’s voice became softer.

“Because I wanted you to discover the truth yourself.”

I looked at him.

“That sounds cruel.”

“Maybe it was.”

He paused.

“But I learned something a long time ago.”

“What?”

“People can pretend for years when they know they are being watched.”

He looked at me.

“But when they believe nobody is watching…”

“They reveal themselves.”

My father’s words echoed the same advice he had given me before my wedding.

Never let someone know how protected you are.

Let them show you who they truly are.

And Nathan had shown me.

Every single piece.

Daniel entered the room.

“Mr. Vale.”

My father looked up.

“Yes?”

“We found something else.”

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“This came from Nathan’s private office.”

I opened it.

The first page contained a handwritten note.

My handwriting.

But I had never written it.

I read the words carefully.

Subject: Eleanor Vale — Possible Entry Point.

My hands went cold.

Possible entry point.

That was how he saw me.

Not as his wife.

Not as a person.

A doorway.

A connection.

A tool.

The next pages contained his plans.

Marriage timeline.

Family introduction.

Investment opportunities.

Potential access.

Everything.

Every romantic moment.

Every promise.

Every “I love you.”

It was all part of a strategy.

I felt something inside me break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Because there was a difference between losing someone you loved…

And realizing that person never truly existed.

My father reached across the table.

“Eleanor.”

I looked at him.

“I’m okay.”

But my voice betrayed me.

I wasn’t.

Not completely.

Because revenge against Nathan was easy.

But accepting that my entire marriage had been a carefully planned lie…

That was something else.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There’s one more thing.”

I looked up.

“What?”

He hesitated.

“Nathan wasn’t the only person involved.”

My father’s expression immediately changed.

“Who else?”

Daniel placed a photograph on the table.

A man standing beside Nathan at a private business event.

I recognized him.

Everyone in the business world knew him.

Victor Lang.

One of the most powerful corporate negotiators in America.

My father stared at the picture.

“Impossible.”

I looked between them.

“Who is he?”

My father’s voice became serious.

“Someone who has spent twenty years trying to destroy everything I built.”

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, Nathan Ashford didn’t look like the mastermind anymore.

He looked like a piece on someone else’s chessboard.

And whoever was controlling the game…

May you like

Had just revealed themselves.

To be continued…
