Chapter 4 — The Fall of Ashford Empire

By sunrise, the world knew Nathan Ashford’s name.

But not for the reasons he wanted.

For years, his name had represented success.

A self-made billionaire.

A brilliant businessman.

A fearless CEO who supposedly built Ashford Global Logistics through determination and intelligence.

Magazines called him a visionary.

Investors called him a genius.

Employees called him demanding.

But now…

They called him something else.

A fraud.

I stood inside my father’s private jet, watching the city lights disappear beneath the clouds.

For the first time in months, I was leaving Blackthorn Manor without fear.

No hiding.

No pretending.

No carefully choosing every word because I worried how Nathan would react.

I was free.

But freedom felt different than I imagined.

I thought I would feel victorious.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

My father sat across from me, quietly reviewing documents.

“You haven’t slept.”

It wasn’t a question.

I looked out the window.

“I don’t know if I can.”

He closed the folder.

“Eleanor.”

I looked at him.

“You did what you had to do.”

I smiled slightly.

“That’s what you always say.”

“Because it’s true.”

I looked down at my hands.

“Do you know what hurts the most?”

My father waited.

“It wasn’t what he did to me.”

My voice became quieter.

“It was realizing that the person I trusted most was never real.”

My father’s expression softened.

“That pain takes time.”

I nodded.

But before I could answer, Daniel entered the cabin.

“Mr. Vale.”

My father looked up.

“Yes?”

“The board meeting has started.”

I watched his expression change.

Not with anger.

With focus.

“What happened?”

Daniel placed a tablet on the table.

“Ashford Global Logistics’ stock dropped forty percent after the documents were released.”

I expected satisfaction.

I expected relief.

Instead, I felt nothing.

Because this was never about money.

It was about the truth.

“Is Nathan trying to fight back?” my father asked.

Daniel nodded.

“He hired three of the most expensive legal teams in the country.”

My father simply looked at the screen.

“Good.”

I frowned.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“People reveal themselves when they believe they are cornered.”

I understood what he meant.

Nathan was dangerous.

A wounded man with power was often more dangerous than a powerful man who felt secure.

“What is he doing?” I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

“He’s blaming you.”

Of course.

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Of course he is.”

“He released a statement claiming you suffered emotional instability and created a false story because of jealousy.”

My father’s expression hardened.

For the first time, I saw the anger he had been hiding.

Not loud anger.

Not uncontrolled anger.

The kind of anger that came from someone who had spent a lifetime learning patience.

“He’s using the same strategy again.”

I nodded.

“Destroy my reputation before anyone believes me.”

My father looked at Daniel.

“Release the hospital records.”

Daniel nodded.

“Already prepared.”

My heart stopped.

The hospital records.

The first time Nathan hurt me.

The night he pushed me down the stairs.

The injuries.

The doctor’s report.

The photographs.

Everything.

I had forgotten that my father had collected copies.

“You kept them?”

My father looked surprised.

“Of course.”

“But I never asked you to.”

“I know.”

He paused.

“A father doesn’t need permission to protect his daughter.”

Those words stayed with me.

Because for so long, I had believed I was alone.

Nathan wanted me to believe that.

Celeste wanted me to believe that.

They spent years convincing me I had no one.

But they were wrong.

Very wrong.

A few hours later, every major news network reported the new evidence.

The hospital records.

The financial documents.

The recordings.

The timeline.

The story Nathan tried to bury became impossible to ignore.

His carefully built image shattered.

But then…

Something unexpected happened.

Daniel received a call.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”

He looked at my father.

“Someone from inside Ashford Global Logistics wants to cooperate.”

My father leaned forward.

“Who?”

Daniel glanced at me.

“The former chief financial officer.”

I frowned.

“Why would he help us?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because he says Nathan threatened him.”

The cabin became silent.

My father looked at me.

“This is bigger than we thought.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel placed a new file on the table.

“This isn’t only about Celeste and financial fraud.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents I had never seen before.

Contracts.

Payments.

Names.

Connections.

Nathan’s betrayal went deeper than I imagined.

My father looked at the evidence.

And for the first time since arriving at Blackthorn Manor…

He looked genuinely concerned.

“Eleanor.”

I looked at him.

“This may be the reason Nathan chose you.”

My heart tightened.

“What?”

My father closed the file.

“Because he didn’t just marry you for love.”

A long silence followed.

“He married you because of who your family was.”

The words felt heavier than anything Nathan had done.

Because suddenly…

The question was no longer why Nathan betrayed me.

The question was…

May you like

How long had he been planning it?

To be continued…
