Chapter 7 — The Return of the Man I Married

The photograph remained on the screen.
Nathan standing beside Victor Lang.
Two men who believed they were untouchable.
Two men who had spent years hiding behind carefully created identities.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my father slowly stood.
“Where was this taken?”
Daniel answered immediately.
“Langford Private Airport. Thirty minutes outside the city.”
“Destination?”
“We don’t know yet.”
My father looked at the image again.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
I had seen that expression before.
It was the same one he wore when he was already three steps ahead of everyone else.
“Nathan didn’t disappear,” my father said.
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“He was moved.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what we believe.”
My father walked toward the window.
“Victor knows the investigation has started. He knows the evidence is being collected.”
“So they’re escaping?”
“No.”
My father turned around.
“They’re changing strategies.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because I understood what that meant.
Nathan had never been someone who accepted losing.
He had spent his entire life convincing himself that he was smarter than everyone around him.
If he couldn’t control the situation through power…
He would control it through destruction.
“What is he going to do?” I asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Daniel spoke.
“He may try to attack your credibility.”
I almost laughed.
“Again?”
Daniel nodded.
“He knows the public already saw evidence against him. So he needs another story.”
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“A victim story.”
The room became silent.
I knew exactly what Nathan would do.
He would turn everything around.
He would claim he was the one being targeted.
He would say my father used his influence.
He would say I manipulated the evidence.
He would make himself look innocent.
Because that was Nathan’s greatest skill.
Not business.
Not leadership.
Manipulation.
“He’s going to try to make people doubt me,” I said.
“Yes.”
My father walked toward me.
“But this time, he doesn’t understand something.”
“What?”
“You are no longer alone.”
Those words stayed with me.
For years, Nathan had built his power by isolating me.
He separated me from friends.
He convinced me that nobody would believe me.
He made me question my own judgment.
But now I finally understood.
The strongest weapon against someone like Nathan wasn’t anger.
It was truth.
And truth didn’t need permission.
Three hours later, Nathan made his move.
Every major news channel received the same statement.
A carefully written message from his legal team.
Nathan Ashford Denies All Allegations and Claims He Was Targeted by a Personal Vendetta.
I read the headline on my father’s conference room screen.
Then the article opened.
The lies began immediately.
Nathan claimed I had become emotionally unstable after discovering his relationship with Celeste.
He claimed I created false evidence to destroy his company.
He claimed my father was using his wealth and influence to silence him.
The same man who had spent months controlling my life was now pretending he was powerless.
I stared at the screen.
“He really thinks people will believe this.”
My father answered quietly.
“Some will.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because people believe the first version of a story they hear.”
He paused.
“That is why we must make sure they hear the truth.”
Daniel entered the room carrying another file.
“We found something.”
My father opened it.
Inside were copies of Nathan’s personal messages.
Not the ones we already had.
New ones.
Recent ones.
My heart stopped when I saw the date.
They were sent after he left Blackthorn Manor.
Nathan had contacted several people.
Investors.
Lawyers.
Former employees.
And one person whose name immediately caught my attention.
Celeste Monroe.
“She’s still working with him?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
I looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel placed another document in front of me.
“A message from Celeste.”
I read it carefully.
You promised me protection. You promised everything would be handled. If you abandon me, I will reveal everything.
I looked up.
“She’s threatening him.”
“Yes.”
My father leaned back.
“Interesting.”
Because suddenly, the partnership between Nathan and Celeste was breaking.
The woman who helped destroy my marriage was now afraid of the man she helped create.
Then another message appeared.
A message Nathan sent back.
If you speak, you lose everything. Remember who gave you power.
I felt a strange sense of satisfaction.
Not happiness.
Not revenge.
Just understanding.
People like Nathan always believed they could control everyone.
Until the people they controlled stopped obeying.
My father looked at Daniel.
“Find Celeste.”
Daniel nodded.
“You think she’ll cooperate?”
My father looked at me.
“I think she knows something we need.”
That evening, I stood alone in my father’s office.
The city stretched beneath the glass windows.
A few days ago, I had been on my knees in Blackthorn Manor.
Broken.
Humiliated.
Invisible.
Now I was standing in the center of a battle that involved powerful people, billions of dollars, and secrets hidden for decades.
But there was one thing I knew.
Nathan wanted a war.
Victor wanted control.
They thought they were fighting against a helpless woman.
They were wrong.
Because the woman they tried to erase was finally ready to tell the world who she really was.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Silence.
Then a familiar voice whispered.
“Eleanor…”
My blood froze.
It was Celeste.
“I need your help.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
The woman who had stood beside Nathan while he hurt me…
Was now asking me for protection.
And before I could respond, she said something that changed everything.
“Nathan didn’t tell you the biggest secret.”
A pause.
“He didn’t marry you to get your father’s money.”
My heart raced.
“Then why?”
Her voice became quieter.
“Because he needed you alive.”
The call ended.
And for the first time…
May you like
I wondered if Nathan Ashford’s plan had been even darker than we imagined.
To be continued…
