Chapter 4 - The Name in the Ledger.

Elias closed the ledger before anyone else could read farther.

That single movement told Elena more than a speech could have.

Her father knew something.

Marcus noticed too.

For the first time since the agents entered, a fragment of confidence returned to him.

“Well,” he said softly.

“That’s interesting.”

Elias handed the ledger to the lead investigator.

“Bag it.”

Marcus laughed.

“You don’t want your daughter reading that?”

Elena looked at her father.

“Dad?”

“Not here.”

Marcus’s smile widened.

“There it is.”

He pointed toward Elias.

“The great protector has secrets.”

Elias ignored him.

Elena did not.

All her life, her father had been careful.

He had taught her that hidden leverage became dangerous the moment emotion entered the room.

Now his silence felt like leverage being used against her.

An agent asked Marcus to surrender his passport.

He refused.

The agent repeated the instruction.

Marcus finally pulled it from a desk drawer and slapped it onto the table.

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

Elena almost laughed.

The words were so familiar.

Threats had always been Marcus’s last refuge when control disappeared.

Elias signaled to his security chief.

“Take Elena downstairs.”

“I’m not leaving yet.”

“Elena.”

“I want to know why your name is in that ledger.”

Her father’s gaze met hers.

A long pause passed.

“Because this began before your marriage.”

Marcus stopped smiling.

Celeste looked toward him.

Sarah whispered, “What?”

Elias stepped closer to Elena.

“Twelve years ago, Vale Dominion investigated a freight consortium called North Meridian.”

Marcus’s face turned rigid.

Elena remembered the name.

North Meridian had collapsed after a banking scandal when she was in college.

She had never connected it to her father.

Elias continued.

“The consortium moved money through logistics companies, customs brokers, and procurement vendors.”

Elena looked at Marcus.

“Ashford Global?”

“Not then.”

Elias’s voice remained controlled.

“But several people who later financed Marcus were connected to it.”

Marcus spoke.

“You’re making this sound bigger than it is.”

Elias turned.

“It is bigger than you.”

That sentence struck Marcus harder than any accusation.

His entire identity depended on being the center of every room.

Elias continued.

“North Meridian lost hundreds of millions when our investigation exposed its network.”

Celeste’s expression had become impossible to read.

Elena saw it.

“You knew.”

Celeste looked at her.

“I knew your surname.”

Marcus stared at Celeste.

“You told me her father was irrelevant.”

“I thought he was retired.”

“You thought?”

Celeste’s voice sharpened.

“Because he disappeared.”

Elias looked at her.

“I withdrew from public leadership.”

Celeste gave a humorless smile.

“After ruining my father.”

The room froze.

Elena stared.

Celeste’s face had lost all pretense now.

“My father was Adrian Monroe.”

Elias nodded.

“I know.”

Marcus looked between them.

“Who the hell was Adrian Monroe?”

Celeste’s eyes remained on Elias.

“The man your father-in-law destroyed.”

Elias corrected her.

“The man who stole pension funds from twelve thousand employees.”

Celeste’s jaw tightened.

“He died under investigation.”

“He died after refusing a plea agreement.”

Elena felt the story rearranging itself again.

Celeste had not simply seduced Marcus.

She had entered their lives carrying an old war.

Sarah looked shaken.

“You never told me that.”

Celeste turned on her.

“You were paid to observe.”

“Not to help you destroy her.”

Celeste laughed.

“Do you really think Elena was the target?”

A beat passed.

Then Celeste looked at Elias.

“She was the door.”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

Marcus turned toward Celeste.

“What did you bring into my company?”

Celeste smiled at him with something close to contempt.

“The same thing you wanted.”

She pointed toward the ledger.

“Access.”

An investigator opened the black case again.

One encrypted drive displayed a label none of them had noticed.

VALE/LEGACY.

Elias’s face went cold.

Then every light in the penthouse went out.
