Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The grand hall fell into a suffocating silence.
The chandelier above seemed to tremble in the reflection of the white marble floor.
Elena remained on her knees, one hand braced against the stone, while Marcus Ashford stood several feet behind her with the leather crop hanging from his fist.
Sarah stood near the windows in her navy gown, both hands covering her mouth.
No one spoke.
The last sound in the room had been Marcus counting.
Two hundred.
Then Celeste had corrected him.
One hundred ninety-eight.
Marcus had smiled and added two more.
Now Elena lifted her head.
Her dark hair was still pinned into its elegant bun.
Her gold evening gown was torn at one seam but otherwise immaculate.
Marcus had expected sobbing.
He had expected pleading.
He had expected surrender.
Instead, Elena held out her hand.
“My phone.”
Marcus stared at her and laughed once.
“You still think someone is coming for you?”
Elena did not answer.
Celeste Monroe lounged in the white leather chair with a champagne glass resting between two fingers.
“She wants an audience for the apology,” Celeste said.
Elena looked at her.
“No.”
The single word erased the smile from Celeste’s face.
Marcus stepped forward.
“What did you say?”
Elena’s eyes moved to him.
“I said no.”
For four years, that word had been forbidden in their marriage.
No to his demands.
No to his explanations.
No to the endless humiliations disguised as misunderstandings.
Marcus took her phone from the inside pocket of his jacket and tossed it onto the floor beside her.
“Call whoever you want.”
His mouth curved into a grin.
“The cameras are off.”
“The staff are gone.”
“And by sunrise, everyone will hear that you attacked Celeste.”
Elena picked up the phone.
Her thumb moved once across the screen.
Marcus looked amused.
Celeste looked bored.
Sarah looked terrified.
The call connected almost instantly.
Elena raised the phone to her ear.
“Dad.”
Marcus’s grin faded by a fraction.
Elena took a slow breath.
“Exactly as you instructed.”
Marcus lowered the crop.
“What does that mean?”
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
“End him.”
The room changed.
Marcus moved first.
He lunged toward her.
“Who is that?”
Elena lowered the phone.
Marcus struck it from her hand.
The device spun across the marble.
He brought the heel of his shoe down on it once.
The screen fractured.
He struck it again with the crop.
Black glass scattered across the floor.
Sarah gasped.
Celeste stood.
Elena did not flinch.
Marcus was breathing hard now.
“Who did you call?”
Elena placed one hand against her knee and rose.
Pain moved through her body, but she refused to let him see it.
Marcus had spent years looking down at her.
This time, when Elena stood, he instinctively stepped back.
“You’re too late,” she said.
His phone vibrated.
Once.
Then again.
Then continuously.
Marcus looked down.
The first message was from Ashford Global’s chief financial officer.
The second came from the chairman of the board.
The third came from his private bank.
ACCOUNT ACCESS SUSPENDED PENDING FEDERAL REVIEW.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Celeste’s champagne glass slipped slightly in her fingers.
“What did you do?” Marcus whispered.
Elena looked toward the shattered phone.
“I made one call.”
Outside the windows, a white beam swept across the penthouse.
Then came the heavy pulse of helicopter blades.
Sarah turned toward the skyline.
Marcus’s phone vibrated again.
FEDERAL WARRANT EXECUTED AT ASHFORD GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS.
The color left his face.
Elena took one careful step toward him.
“You thought I was alone.”
Another step.
“You built everything on that mistake.”
A thunderous knock struck the penthouse doors.
Marcus turned.
May you like
Before he could speak, the locks released from the outside.
And the first man through the door was someone Marcus had spent four years calling a retired accountant.
