Chapter 17 - A Voice Made of Stolen Pieces.

Elena listened to the fake recording again.

The rhythm was hers.

The breath pattern was hers.

Even the small pause before Marcus’s name sounded like her.

Nolan had not merely copied her face.

He had copied her voice.

The judge suspended the shareholder vote for twenty-four hours.

It was exactly enough time for Ashford Global to keep collapsing without clear leadership.

Marcus’s attorneys requested a private meeting with Elena.

She refused.

Marcus called her directly.

She answered only because federal investigators recorded the line.

“I know how they made it.”

Elena said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“Company media archives.”

“Interviews.”

“Private videos.”

“You gave them those too?”

“Nolan’s team managed our communications servers.”

“Of course they did.”

Marcus took the insult without responding.

“There’s a studio.”

“Where?”

“New Jersey.”

“Ashford Media Annex.”

Elias’s team searched the address.

The annex was supposed to be a corporate video facility.

Its servers had been wiped that morning.

But a building access log showed someone entered at 4:12 a.m.

Vivian Cross.

Elena confronted her.

Vivian looked genuinely stunned.

“I’ve been under guard since the pier.”

Daniel agreed.

The access card carried Vivian’s name, but she could not have used it.

Another double.

Another stolen identity inside an identity theft operation.

Elias finally saw Nolan’s larger method.

He did not create one false person.

He created interchangeable identities.

A name could move between bodies.

A voice could be rebuilt from recordings.

A signature could be learned.

A passport could be copied.

Responsibility could be assigned to whoever Nolan needed.

That was why so many previous investigations collapsed.

Witnesses had seen real people.

They had simply been given false names.

Elena looked at Marcus.

“You built a logistics empire for a man who specialized in moving identities.”

Marcus’s face was hollow.

“I didn’t know.”

“You never wanted to know.”

That difference defined him.

Federal agents searched the media annex.

Behind a false wall, they found a sound booth.

Inside were labeled folders containing voice samples.

ELENA.

MARCUS.

CELESTE.

ELIAS.

SARAH.

VIVIAN.

And dozens more.

One folder stopped Elias cold.

MARGARET.

Elena stared at it.

Her mother’s voice had been archived too.

The recording that warned Elias about Nolan could now be fake.

Every revelation had become unstable.

Truth itself had been weaponized.

Then a technician found something Nolan had missed.

The voice-generation system stored source maps showing which original recordings produced each fake sentence.

The fake “burn Ashford to the ground” recording had been assembled from twenty-seven clips.

Most came from Elena’s public speeches.

One came from a private conversation inside Blackthorn Manor.

Recorded three years earlier.

Before Celeste supposedly entered their lives.

Elena looked at Marcus.

“Who had microphones in our house three years ago?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No one.”

Daniel checked the original installation records.

The smart-home security system had been supplied by a contractor.

The contractor was owned by Hawthorne Trust.

Elias exhaled slowly.

Nolan had been listening from the beginning.

Then the technician opened the MARGARET folder.

There was only one source file inside.

Its date was nine years earlier.

The day before Margaret Vale died.

Elena pressed play.

Her mother’s real voice filled the room.

This time, the software marked it ORIGINAL.

Margaret said one sentence.

“Nolan is not the man at the top.”

Then she spoke a name.

Elias dropped the tablet.

May you like

The name was Daniel Cross.

His own security chief.
