Chapter 13 - The Signature That Walked.

The notarized filing was perfect.

That was what frightened Elias.

A crude forgery could be challenged.

This looked legitimate.

The signature matched Elena’s hand.

The notary stamp belonged to a licensed professional in Virginia.

The attached identification scan showed Elena’s passport.

Marcus looked at her.

“You were with me all morning.”

Elena stared back.

“For once, that helps.”

Federal investigators contacted the notary.

He confirmed that Elena had appeared before him at 10:14 a.m.

He described her gold earrings.

Her dark hair.

Her gray coat.

He remembered her because she seemed nervous.

Elena had never met him.

Vivian looked sick.

“They used another double.”

Elias shook his head.

“Or altered the record afterward.”

Daniel pulled traffic footage from outside the notary office.

At 10:09, a black sedan arrived.

A woman stepped out.

The camera angle was poor.

Her face was hidden by sunglasses.

But her height and build matched Elena.

Marcus whispered, “How many are there?”

Vivian looked at him.

“How many women did you help Nolan study?”

Marcus had no answer.

Elena thought of gala photos, charity videos, interviews, and thousands of images online.

Her face had become raw material.

Elias ordered immediate identity alerts with banks and federal systems.

Elena stopped him.

“If we flag everything publicly, Nolan knows we found the impersonation network.”

“He already knows.”

“Then why keep doing it?”

Elias paused.

Because Nolan wanted them to react.

The Baltimore warehouse might be bait.

Daniel received satellite imagery.

Three trucks had left the site at dawn.

The building now appeared empty.

Elias considered waiting.

Elena disagreed.

“If VIVIAN was moved, the warehouse may still tell us where.”

A federal team entered just before sunrise.

They found no people.

No active servers.

No paper.

Only cooling racks bolted to the floor and hundreds of severed network cables.

Then an agent discovered a message painted behind one rack.

NOT EVERY COPY LIVES ON A SERVER.

Below the sentence was a QR code.

The code opened a private livestream.

Nolan Price sat inside what appeared to be a hotel suite.

Celeste stood behind him.

She looked exhausted but unharmed.

“Good morning, Elena,” Nolan said.

His voice was calm.

“You’ve had a difficult evening.”

Marcus moved closer to the monitor.

Nolan smiled.

“And Marcus.”

“Still alive.”

Marcus clenched his jaw.

Nolan continued.

“I imagine you’re learning how little of Ashford Global was ever yours.”

Elena said, “What do you want?”

Nolan looked directly into the camera.

“Nothing you can give me now.”

“Then why contact us?”

“To offer you a choice.”

The screen split.

On one side appeared financial documents implicating Elena.

On the other appeared recordings implicating Marcus, Celeste, Nolan, and several bankers.

“One archive clears you.”

“One archive destroys everyone.”

Elena understood.

“You separated the evidence.”

“Of course.”

“If you release the file that clears your name, the evidence against Marcus disappears with it.”

Marcus looked hopeful.

Elena noticed.

Nolan continued.

“If you preserve the criminal archive, the fabricated records identifying you as architect of the network remain in circulation.”

Elias stepped forward.

“False choice.”

Nolan smiled.

“Courts decide what is false.”

Then Celeste suddenly moved.

She grabbed something from the table.

Nolan turned.

The livestream shook.

Celeste shouted one sentence before the feed went black.

“Elena, he has your mother’s files.”

Elias went completely still.

Elena looked at him.

May you like

“My mother?”

For the first time since the investigation began, Elias Vale looked afraid.
