Chapter 14 - The Files of Margaret Vale.

Elena’s mother had been dead for nine years.

Margaret Vale had been a corporate attorney with a reputation for ending negotiations before other lawyers realized they had begun.

To Elena, she had been warm, impatient, brilliant, and impossible to fool.

Her death from an aneurysm had come without warning.

At least that was the story Elena had always known.

Now Nolan had her files.

Elena looked at her father.

“What files?”

Elias dismissed everyone except Elena and Daniel from the room.

Marcus protested.

No one listened.

Sarah and Vivian were taken to another area under protection.

When the doors closed, Elias removed his glasses.

“Your mother worked the North Meridian investigation with me.”

Elena stared.

“You told me she stayed out of Vale Dominion.”

“She did after you were born.”

“After?”

Elias nodded.

“Before that, she was our lead legal strategist.”

Elena tried to remember her mother discussing North Meridian.

Nothing came.

“Why hide it?”

“Because Adrian Monroe threatened her.”

Elena’s anger rose.

“So you hid her work from me for nine years?”

“I hid the danger.”

“There is a difference.”

“Not to the person being lied to.”

Elias accepted the blow.

Then he continued.

“Margaret found evidence Nolan Price was more important than Adrian Monroe.”

“But she could not prove it.”

“After North Meridian collapsed, Nolan disappeared.”

“Your mother kept investigating privately.”

Elena understood.

“The files.”

Elias nodded.

“She stored them separately.”

“Where?”

“I thought they were destroyed after her death.”

Daniel asked the question Elena could not.

“Could her death have been connected?”

Elias’s silence answered first.

Elena felt the room tilt.

“You said aneurysm.”

“It was.”

“That doesn’t answer him.”

Elias looked older suddenly.

“There was no evidence of interference.”

“But you suspected it.”

“Yes.”

Elena walked to the window.

Morning had begun to gray the sky.

Behind them, Marcus’s empire was collapsing.

Ahead, a war she had inherited without consent was opening.

“What was in her files?”

“Names.”

“Banks.”

“Political intermediaries.”

“Shipping routes.”

“And one theory.”

Elena turned.

“What theory?”

“That Nolan never wanted North Meridian to survive.”

Elias explained that Nolan had designed some of the very transactions that later exposed the consortium.

He may have been looting his own partners while preparing their collapse.

Adrian Monroe believed Nolan was his lawyer.

Margaret believed Nolan was his executioner.

Elena thought of Marcus.

History repeating itself.

Nolan funded Ashford.

Then prepared Ashford’s destruction.

“He has been doing this for decades.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message had arrived through the same private channel.

A photograph.

Margaret Vale stood outside a courthouse twenty years earlier.

Beside her stood Nolan Price.

On the back of the scanned photograph were handwritten words.

MARGARET KNEW THE SECOND NAME.

Elena looked at Elias.

“What second name?”

“I don’t know.”

Another file arrived.

An audio clip.

Elias’s face lost color before it even played.

Margaret’s voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, do not chase Nolan.”

A pause.

“Find the person he answers to.”

The recording ended.

Elena felt cold.

Her father whispered, “I never heard that.”

Daniel checked the file metadata.

“It was recorded two days before Mrs. Vale died.”

Then a final message appeared.

ASK MARCUS WHO OWNS 17% OF ASHFORD GLOBAL THROUGH HAWTHORNE TRUST.

Elena opened the door and walked straight toward her husband.

Marcus saw her face and immediately knew the question.

He backed away.

Elena stopped in front of him.

“Who owns Hawthorne Trust?”

Marcus said nothing.

“Who?”

May you like

His answer was barely audible.

“Your mother.”
