Chapter 7 - The Cellar Behind The Wall.

The service staircase was narrow, uncarpeted, and almost completely dark beneath the mansion's polished public rooms.

Ava descended first with Elena behind her and James covering the rear.

The air smelled of stone, wine, and dust.

Above them, the party had dissolved into shouting voices and distant security alarms.

Ava reached the cellar door and entered a code Nolan had once used in front of her without realizing she was watching.

The lock opened.

James glanced at her.

"You remember everything."

"I learned to."

She did not explain that living with Nolan required memorizing every sound, schedule, password, and change in mood.

Elena seemed to understand anyway.

Rows of expensive wine stretched along both walls.

At the back stood a floor-to-ceiling rack that looked permanent.

Elena walked directly to a dusty bottle of Bordeaux and pulled it forward without removing it.

A hidden latch clicked.

The entire rack shifted two inches away from the wall.

Ava stared.

"How do you know this house better than I do?"

Elena touched the stone behind the rack.

"Because I designed the original security architecture before Victor stole the company."

James pushed the rack aside.

Behind it was a steel passage barely wide enough for one person.

A red light blinked over a keypad.

Elena entered six numbers.

Access denied.

She tried again.

Access denied.

The countdown on her phone showed four minutes and eleven seconds.

James looked at the panel.

"Can we force it?"

"Not without triggering the magnets immediately."

Ava studied the keypad.

A fingerprint smudge marked three numbers more heavily than the others.

She remembered Nolan coming home from the mansion three nights earlier with dust on his cuffs and a cut on his thumb.

He had accused her of asking too many questions when she noticed.

Ava typed his birthday.

Nothing.

She typed Victor's birthday.

Nothing.

Then she remembered the number Nolan used on his phone, luggage, and garage safe.

0714.

July fourteenth.

Ava had once asked why that date mattered.

Nolan had said it was none of her business.

Elena inhaled sharply.

"July fourteenth was the night they took me."

Ava added two zeros to the end.

The keypad turned green.

James stared at the door.

"He made the date your mother disappeared into a password."

Ava's stomach twisted.

"He thought it was a victory."

The steel door unlocked.

Inside, rows of server towers blinked beneath cold blue light.

Metal filing cabinets lined the opposite wall.

A monitor displayed a countdown.

03:28.

Elena rushed to the central console.

"I need a storage drive."

James opened a drawer and found several encrypted drives in tamper-proof cases.

Ava turned toward the cabinets.

Each was labeled with years, companies, and initials.

One drawer carried her name.

AVA MERCER.

Her hand hovered over the handle.

James saw it.

"You don't have to open that."

Ava pulled it anyway.

Inside were photographs of her entering restaurants, leaving her apartment, visiting her father, attending therapy, buying groceries, and sitting alone in her car.

There were transcripts of phone calls.

There were copies of medical records she had never authorized anyone to obtain.

There was a folder marked COMPLIANCE INCIDENTS.

Ava opened it.

The first page described the night Nolan broke her phone after she refused to sign the management agreement.

The second described a bruise he caused two months earlier.

The third included a photograph taken from inside their bedroom.

Ava dropped the folder.

James caught it before it hit the floor.

His face became unreadable.

"Dad."

He closed the folder.

"We take it."

Elena inserted a drive into the console.

The transfer began.

Twenty-seven percent.

Forty-one percent.

Then the steel door behind them slammed shut.

A speaker crackled overhead.

May you like

Nolan's voice filled the room.

"You should have stayed upstairs, Ava."
