Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

The first thing Ava Mercer noticed when she entered the Price mansion was how carefully everyone avoided looking at her face.

The second thing she noticed was that her father had already seen the bruise.

Nolan Price stood beside the birthday table in a sharp blue suit, accepting handshakes as if the party belonged to him rather than to the woman whose name glittered across the wall in gold letters.

Ava had spent twenty minutes in the guest bathroom pressing concealer over the purple mark on her cheek.

She had spent another ten deciding whether the finger-shaped bruises on her shoulder could be hidden beneath her black dress.

Those two instructions had felt unrelated until James turned his head and looked directly at her.

Colonel James Mercer stood beneath the enormous crystal chandelier in his Marine dress blues, silver hair precise, shoulders square, and expression so calm that Ava immediately became more afraid of what might happen next.

They could not.

Nolan had told her not to embarrass him by wearing a jacket.

He had also told her not to speak to her father alone.

Ava stopped walking.

Her father did not rush toward her.

He did not ask if she was all right.

Nolan noticed the silence and crossed the room with an easy smile.

"Colonel Mercer, glad you made it."

James did not offer his hand.

"Why is her face covered in bruises?"

Nolan looked at her, and the smile on his face became smaller and uglier.

"Ava is clumsy."

James kept his eyes on him.

"I asked why her face is bruised."

Nolan gave a quiet laugh because he had spent his entire life learning that powerful men laughed when they wanted a room to understand there would be no consequences.

His father, Victor Price, watched from the staircase without intervening.

Ava wished the marble floor would open beneath her.

James finally looked at his daughter.

"Ava."

Her throat tightened.

Nolan stepped slightly between them.

"Don't make this dramatic."

James looked back at him.

"Move."

Nolan did not.

Instead, he leaned closer with the faint smirk Ava knew too well.

"Fine. You want honesty?"

Ava's pulse hammered.

"Nolan, don't."

He ignored her.

"I did it."

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

Nolan lifted his glass and smiled at James.

"A slap instead of Happy Birthday."

For one suspended second, nobody moved.

Then Celeste Price laughed.

It was not loud.

It was worse than loud.

It was the casual little laugh of someone who believed the humiliation belonged to Ava and not to the man who had just confessed.

Two guests joined her because cruelty becomes easier when wealth gives it permission.

James looked at the birthday cake.

He set down the untouched glass of water in his hand.

Nolan's smile returned.

"What are you going to do, Colonel?"

James lifted the cake from the table.

Ava had only enough time to see Nolan's smile vanish.

Then her father drove the entire cake into Nolan Price's face.

The quartet stopped in the middle of a note.

James calmly removed the gold watch from his wrist.

Nolan stared up through white frosting, suddenly unable to find the arrogance he had worn seconds earlier.

James turned his head toward Ava.

"Outside. Now."

May you like

Ava took one step toward the patio doors.

Then every lock in the mansion clicked at once.
