Chapter 15 - The Hangar With No Windows.

The Hale Memorial Airfield looked abandoned from the highway.
Its runway lights were off, the terminal was dark, and only one hangar showed a thin strip of illumination beneath its metal doors.
Ava sat in the rear of an unmarked police car half a mile away while officers fitted a discreet microphone beneath the collar of her black dress.
James watched in silence.
Elena held the decoy folder.
The commander reviewed the plan one final time.
Ava would walk to the hangar alone.
Officers would remain concealed outside the perimeter unless Nolan or Gregory presented an immediate threat to Ruth or Ava.
The folder's tracking drive would transmit as soon as Nolan connected it to another device.
Ava nodded.
Her hands were no longer shaking.
That surprised her.
She had spent months fearing Nolan in kitchens, bedrooms, parking garages, and quiet elevators where nobody else could see him change.
Tonight he was finally the one hiding.
James touched her shoulder carefully, avoiding the bruise.
"You do not need to prove anything."
"I'm not proving anything."
Ava looked toward the hangar.
"I'm ending something."
She walked the final distance alone.
At the hangar door, she knocked twice.
The metal panel lifted three feet.
Nolan's voice came from inside.
"Slide the folder under."
Ava crouched and pushed it beneath the door.
"Ruth first."
"You don't set terms."
Ava stood.
"Then you don't get my signature."
Silence.
The door rose slowly.
Nolan stood inside wearing his frosting-stained blue suit beneath a borrowed overcoat.
Behind him, Ruth sat on a chair with her wrists tied loosely in front of her.
Gregory Hale stood beside a small private jet with a leather briefcase in his hand.
He was in his fifties, polished, expensive, and furious.
"Bring her inside."
Nolan stepped aside.
Ava entered.
The hangar door lowered behind her.
Ruth looked at Ava and rolled her eyes.
"This idiot tied sailor knots."
Nolan glared at her.
Ava almost laughed.
Gregory opened the black folder.
"Where is the drive?"
Ava pointed.
He removed it and inserted it into a laptop on a nearby workbench.
Outside, hidden police monitors received the beacon.
Inside, Ava heard a tiny electronic tone.
Gregory began scanning the files.
"These are incomplete."
"They're what I was given."
Nolan stepped closer to Ava.
"Sign the agreement."
He placed a pen on the table.
Ava looked at the page.
"You really think this still works?"
"It works if you want Ruth walking out."
Ruth sighed loudly.
"Ava, for heaven's sake, don't sign anything because of me."
Gregory slapped the table.
"Quiet."
Ruth stared at him.
"Your grandfather was a thief and you have his manners."
Gregory's face flushed.
Nolan grabbed Ava's wrist.
The movement was familiar.
Too familiar.
For one second, Ava's body remembered every time she had frozen.
Then she looked down at his hand.
"Let go."
Nolan tightened his grip.
"Sign it."
Ava looked directly into his eyes.
"No."
Nolan lifted his other hand.
Before it moved farther, the hangar lights snapped off.
A loudspeaker outside thundered across the runway.
"Police. Step away from Ava Mercer."

In the darkness, Gregory shouted something Ava could not hear.
Then the private jet's engine began to turn.
