Chapter 18 - The Judge Beneath The Mansion.

Police units returned to the Price estate with federal agents less than twenty minutes later.

Ava went with them despite James asking whether she wanted to remain at the airfield with Ruth.

"No more rooms in that house without witnesses."

James accepted the answer.

Celeste had already been transported for questioning.

Victor remained in custody.

Elena led federal agents through the wine cellar passage.

The archive door stood open exactly as they had left it.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then one agent noticed a faint draft behind the final row of filing cabinets.

James helped pull the cabinet away from the wall.

A narrow service door appeared behind it.

Elena stared.

"That was not in my design."

The door opened onto a concrete tunnel running beneath the west lawn.

Footprints marked the dust.

Ava followed the agents to a small underground utility room beneath the old guesthouse.

Judge Harold Vance sat at a metal desk surrounded by boxes of files.

He was feeding documents into an industrial shredder.

He looked up as six officers entered.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vance sighed.

"I suppose Nolan talked."

A federal agent ordered him away from the shredder.

Vance obeyed with the exhausted irritation of a man whose inconvenience seemed greater to him than his crimes.

Elena entered behind the agents.

Vance stared at her.

"You were always persistent."

"You signed papers declaring me incompetent without meeting me once."

"I relied on medical experts."

"Experts paid through a foundation controlled by your friends."

Vance shrugged.

"That is an interpretation."

Ava felt fury rise.

"My mother lost fourteen years because of your interpretation."

Vance looked at Ava's bruised face.

"And you must be the daughter."

James stepped forward.

Ava lifted one hand.

He stopped.

She walked closer to Vance herself.

"Did you forge my father's signature?"

Vance smiled thinly.

"Your father signed many things he did not read carefully."

James's face tightened.

Ava did not turn around.

"That wasn't my question."

The federal agent opened one of the boxes.

Inside were original guardianship forms, medical affidavits, payments to doctors, and copies of James's settlement paperwork.

A light table sat in the corner with tracing paper still clipped over one of his signatures.

Vance's smile disappeared.

Elena stared at the evidence of how cheaply her life had been converted into paperwork.

The agent placed Vance under arrest.

As officers searched the room, they found one additional file labeled A. MERCER - AGE 25.

Ava opened it with gloved hands under supervision.

If Ava refused the marriage agreement, they planned to have her declared incapable of managing the trust.

Nolan's abuse was not only tolerated.

It had been useful to them.

Elena put one arm around her daughter.

Ava let her.

James stood on Ava's other side without touching her until she reached for his hand.

Then an agent at the desk called for silence.

He had found a scheduled court order on Vance's computer.

It was set to activate at 8:00 a.m.

The order froze Ava's forty-eight-million-dollar trust and named a temporary corporate custodian.

The custodian was not Price Holdings.

May you like

It was the Hale Memorial Foundation.

And despite Vance's arrest, the order had already been electronically filed.
