Chapter 17 - The Signature That Looked Like His.

James asked to see the page without touching it.

The evidence technician held it beneath the hangar light.

The signature looked exactly like his.

Ava had seen her father's name on birthday cards, school forms, military paperwork, and the checks he still insisted on writing at restaurants.

The slant was correct.

The heavy final stroke beneath Mercer was correct.

Even the small break in the capital J was there.

James looked at Elena.

"I never signed this."

Elena believed him immediately.

"Dad, did you know there was a guardianship?"

"No."

"Did anyone from Price Holdings contact you after Mom disappeared?"

James went quiet.

Ava felt the answer before he spoke.

"Yes."

Elena closed her eyes.

"James."

He looked ashamed.

Three weeks after Elena's supposed death, a Price attorney had visited James at a military hospital where he was recovering from injuries suffered during an overseas operation.

The attorney claimed Elena's company carried substantial hidden debt and warned that creditors could pursue Ava's future inheritance.

He offered James a settlement that would protect the child from litigation if James signed confidentiality papers regarding the crash.

"Did you sign them?"

Ava's voice sounded smaller than she wanted.

James nodded.

"Yes."

Anger moved through her like heat.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I believed your mother was dead, and I believed the agreement protected you."

"You believed the Prices?"

"I believed the lawyers and the military liaison who came with them."

Elena looked sharply at him.

"What liaison?"

James named retired General Everett Cole.

Elena and the police commander exchanged a look.

Cole appeared repeatedly in the recovered ledger.

He had authorized land transfers around defense facilities tied to Hale's pension scheme.

James stared at the ledger.

"He was my commanding officer."

Ava understood the deeper trap.

Price money had not only bought judges and doctors.

It had purchased trusted faces around every person who might question Elena's death.

James reached into his wallet and removed an old folded card.

He had carried it for fourteen years.

It was the final note Elena had written him before her disappearance.

MEETING MOVED TO THURSDAY.

IF I AM WRONG, WE LAUGH ABOUT IT.

IF I AM RIGHT, KEEP AVA AWAY FROM HALE.

James had assumed Hale meant a company attorney named Robert Hale who worked on the patent dispute.

He had never connected it to Senator Malcolm Hale.

"I failed you."

He looked at Elena.

She shook her head.

"They deceived you."

"Both can be true."

Ava looked at him.

James did not ask her to forgive him.

He did not explain away the settlement.

He simply stood inside the consequence of his choice.

That made it harder to stay furious and easier to remain honest.

"I need time."

James nodded.

"Take it."

A federal investigator arrived at the hangar just before one in the morning.

The archive upload had triggered automatic referrals to multiple agencies because the pension and defense records crossed jurisdictions.

The investigator reviewed the forged guardianship authorization.

"This signature may have been lifted from the settlement papers Colonel Mercer actually signed."

James's expression hardened.

The investigator continued.

"If so, whoever created the guardianship had access to the original Price legal file."

Elena looked toward Gregory.

Gregory said nothing.

Nolan did.

"You're all still missing the best part."

Ava turned toward him.

His smile returned, weaker but familiar.

"Judge Vance is at the mansion right now."

The police commander checked his radio.

No officer had reported Vance arriving.

May you like

Nolan leaned back against the patrol car.

"Because he didn't come through the front gate."
