Chapter 14 - Celeste's Last Insurance Policy.

The commander ordered Celeste's hands cuffed before she could touch another device.

She looked almost offended by the metal around her wrists.

"This is unnecessary."

Ava stared at her.

"So were the fourteen years you stole from my mother."

Celeste's eyes narrowed.

"I did not steal them."

Elena stepped closer.

"You visited me every Christmas."

Ava turned toward her mother.

Elena's voice remained steady.

"She came to the facility each year with photographs of you."

Ava felt suddenly sick.

Celeste smiled faintly.

"You should have been grateful."

Elena's control finally cracked.

"You showed me my daughter growing up without me."

"I showed you what happened when you threatened my family."

The room went still.

Ava realized Celeste had just confessed in front of police and dozens of witnesses.

Celeste realized it one second later.

Her face tightened.

The commander nodded to an officer recording the conversation.

"Keep that camera running."

Elena asked how Celeste had accessed the archive.

Celeste looked away.

Ava followed her gaze toward the birthday decorations.

One blue balloon near the staircase hung lower than the others.

A tiny black object was attached beneath its ribbon weight.

The security guard picked it up.

It was a wireless relay no larger than a matchbox.

Elena stared at it.

"She placed a network bridge inside the foyer."

Celeste shrugged.

"I host parties for a living."

The relay had uploaded selected files from the archive to an external server.

The destination belonged to the Hale Memorial Foundation.

The foundation's executive director was Celeste's older cousin, Gregory Hale.

James looked at the commander.

"Is he at the airfield?"

A check of vehicle cameras showed Gregory's car entering the private road less than an hour earlier.

Ava understood the shape of the plan.

Nolan was not improvising alone.

The surviving members of Celeste's family were trying to gather the evidence, control Ava's trust, and move everything out through the airfield before authorities understood the full conspiracy.

Elena's phone showed eleven minutes until midnight.

The commander approved the decoy exchange with tactical units already moving into position.

Ava placed the false management agreement and tracking drive inside a slim black folder.

James pulled her aside.

"You can stop at any point."

Ava nodded.

"I know."

"That includes now."

"I know."

He looked at her bruised cheek.

"I should have seen this sooner."

Ava wanted to tell him he could not see what she had spent months hiding.

Instead, she said the thing she needed him to hear.

"I need you to be my father tonight, not my commanding officer."

James took that in without defending himself.

"Understood."

Ava's throat tightened.

"That was very commanding-officer of you."

He gave a tiny nod.

"Working on it."

Elena joined them.

For a moment, the three stood together beneath the broken decorations like a family assembled from separate disasters.

Then Elena held out something small.

It was Ava's childhood silver bracelet, the one she had believed was buried with her mother.

"I kept this every day."

Ava closed her fingers around it.

"Come back from the airfield and I'll tell you the whole story."

Ava fastened the bracelet around her wrist.

"You better."

They left the mansion with police vehicles running dark behind them.

As Ava entered the unmarked car, her phone received a final message from Nolan.

MIDNIGHT MEANS MIDNIGHT.

Then Ruth's picture arrived again.

This time Gregory Hale was standing behind her.
