CHAPTER 9: THE CONFESSION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 9: THE CONFESSION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The woman standing in front of me was not the Vanessa I had known.

Not the woman who held my hand in hospital waiting rooms.

Not the woman who laughed beside me during charity events.

Not the woman who whispered that she loved me when the world was asleep.

That woman had disappeared.

What remained was someone colder.

Someone who looked like she had been preparing for this moment for years.

Vanessa slowly walked toward the desk.

She did not look nervous anymore.

That scared me more than anything.

A guilty person usually panicked when their secret was discovered.

Vanessa didn’t panic.

She adapted.

“You finally found out,” she said.

Her voice was quiet.

Almost peaceful.

I stared at her.

“Found out what?”

She looked at the laptop.

Then at the flash drive.

Then back at me.

“That I’m not who you thought I was.”

The honesty shocked me.

After months of lies, I expected denial.

Anger.

Excuses.

Instead, she admitted it.

“You’re Daniel Whitmore’s daughter.”

The room became silent.

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She laughed softly.

A bitter laugh.

“Would you have stayed if I told you the truth?”

I didn’t answer.

Because she knew the answer.

Probably not.

She walked toward the window.

For a moment, she looked almost sad.

“My father spent years telling me about you.”

I frowned.

“About me?”

“Yes.”

She looked at the lake.

“He told me you destroyed him.”

“That’s not what happened.”

Her eyes returned to mine.

“Isn’t it?”

“No.”

My voice became harder.

“Your father stole from my company.”

She shook her head.

“That’s the story you believed.”

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa turned around.

“I’m saying my father wasn’t the villain you think he was.”

Anger rose inside me.

“Your father tried to take everything I built.”

“And you took everything from him.”

“He lost because he betrayed me.”

She stepped closer.

“You never asked why he did it.”

I said nothing.

Because the truth was…

I had never wanted to know.

After the lawsuit ended, I buried that chapter of my life.

I focused on rebuilding.

I convinced myself the past didn’t matter.

Vanessa saw my silence.

“You don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me.”

She studied me.

“Why?”

“Because I deserve the truth.”

A strange expression crossed her face.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I came into your life because of my father.”

My chest tightened.

“So everything was fake?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt more than any confession.

Finally, she whispered:

“At first.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

At first.

Meaning later?

Meaning somewhere along the way, something changed?

I stepped back.

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to get close to me.”

“Yes.”

“You planned the engagement.”

Her eyes lowered.

“Yes.”

The room felt smaller.

I remembered every moment.

Every kiss.

Every conversation.

Every promise.

All of it built on a lie.

“Why the medical treatments?”

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t do that.”

I stared at her.

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“But you should.”

I laughed.

A cold, angry laugh.

“You poisoned me.”

“No.”

Her answer came immediately.

“I did not poison you.”

“Then who did?”

She looked at me.

And for the first time…

She looked afraid.

“I don’t know.”

That surprised me.

Because Vanessa Hale had been in control of everything.

Or at least I thought she was.

She continued.

“My father wanted revenge.”

“Of course he did.”

“But he wasn’t the only person involved.”

I watched her carefully.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa walked toward the desk.

She picked up the photograph of her and Daniel.

“My father had enemies too.”

I frowned.

“What enemies?”

“People who wanted him gone.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel knew things.”

The answer was vague.

Too vague.

“What things?”

She looked at me.

“The truth about your father.”

My body went still.

Again, my father.

Everyone kept bringing him up.

Everyone except me.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.”

The room became completely silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“What did you say?”

She looked away.

“Your father was investigating something before he died.”

“What?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Because I spent years trying to find out myself.”

I stared at her.

The woman who betrayed me.

The woman who lied to me.

The woman who may have helped destroy my health.

And somehow…

She was telling me something that sounded impossible.

“My father blamed you because he thought you were responsible.”

I frowned.

“Responsible for what?”

Vanessa’s eyes became darker.

“For your father’s death.”

My heart stopped.

“That’s insane.”

“I know.”

“Then why believe it?”

“Because I was young.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“I believed my father.”

She looked down.

“I wanted justice.”

I understood.

Not forgiveness.

Not acceptance.

But understanding.

Vanessa was not just a villain.

She was someone who had been carrying anger for years.

Someone who had been manipulated.

But that did not erase what she had done.

“You still hurt me.”

Her eyes filled slightly.

“I know.”

“You watched me get sick.”

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to find out who was behind it.”

I stared.

“What?”

She opened her eyes.

“I noticed something was wrong before you did.”

My heart raced.

“What are you talking about?”

“The tea.”

I froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Her face changed.

Guilt.

“I thought I could handle it.”

The answer made me furious.

“You thought you could control someone poisoning me?”

“I thought I could find evidence.”

“And while you searched, I suffered.”

She looked away.

“I know.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked truly broken.

Not fake.

Not controlled.

Human.

But before I could say anything, my phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Alexander Mercer.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

The voice continued.

“You need to stop listening to Vanessa.”

My eyes moved toward her.

“Why?”

The person on the phone whispered:

“Because she is still hiding the biggest secret.”

A pause.

Then the words that changed everything:

“Vanessa Hale knows who killed your father.”

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Vanessa looked at me.

She knew exactly what I had heard.

May you like

And this time…

She didn’t deny it.
