CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET MESSAGE IN THE DARK

CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET MESSAGE IN THE DARK

The message stayed on my phone screen for several seconds.

“If you want to survive tonight, pretend you trust Vanessa.”

I stared at those words until they blurred.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I didn’t want to believe them.

My entire life had been built on trust.

Trusting my instincts.

Trusting my employees.

Trusting the people closest to me.

And now, standing in the center of my own engagement party, I was being warned that the woman I planned to marry might be the greatest danger I had ever faced.

I quickly locked my phone.

A billionaire’s worst enemy was never money.

It was information.

And someone had just given me information that could destroy everything.

“Mr. Mercer?”

I turned.

One of the servers was standing beside me.

“Your dinner, sir.”

I looked down at the plate.

The truffle risotto.

The grilled sea bass.

The vegetables arranged perfectly around the edges.

It looked exactly like every meal Vanessa had prepared for me over the last few months.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Perfect.

And suddenly terrifying.

I smiled politely.

“Thank you.”

The server walked away.

I didn’t touch the food.

Instead, I picked up my champagne glass and pretended to drink.

From across the room, Vanessa watched me.

She was too intelligent not to notice.

That was the problem with Vanessa.

She paid attention to everything.

When I changed my schedule.

When I skipped breakfast.

When I stayed late at the office.

When my mood shifted by even a few degrees.

At first, I thought it was love.

I thought I had finally found someone who truly understood me.

Now I wondered if it had always been control.

Vanessa walked toward me.

Every person around her moved aside.

She had that effect.

People naturally made room for her.

“Are you enjoying yourself?”

She asked with a smile.

I nodded.

“Of course.”

She looked at my plate.

“You haven’t eaten.”

I shrugged.

“I’m not very hungry.”

Her smile remained.

But her eyes changed.

Only slightly.

A stranger would never notice.

I did.

“I made sure the chef prepared your favorite.”

She touched the edge of my plate.

“You always complain when you don’t eat properly.”

Her voice sounded caring.

But something about it felt different now.

Like a warning hidden beneath kindness.

“I know.”

I smiled.

“I just need a moment.”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“You’ve been acting strange all night.”

I laughed softly.

“Have I?”

“Yes.”

Her fingers wrapped around my arm.

“You know I worry about you.”

A few guests nearby looked over.

They smiled.

They saw a devoted woman caring for her future husband.

They didn’t see what I saw.

A person trying to figure out whether I knew too much.

“I’ll be fine,” I said.

Vanessa studied my face.

Then she smiled again.

“Good.”

She walked away.

The moment she disappeared into the crowd, I headed toward the hallway.

I needed answers.

Not from Vanessa.

Not yet.

I needed someone who wasn’t afraid of her.

I found Nora near the kitchen entrance.

She was arranging empty trays.

When she saw me, she immediately looked nervous.

“Mr. Mercer…”

“Who is Lily?”

Her hands froze.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she slowly looked around.

“Not here.”

We moved into a small storage room beside the kitchen.

The sound of the party became distant.

Finally, Nora spoke.

“She’s my daughter.”

I nodded.

“That’s what I thought.”

Nora looked down.

“She wasn’t supposed to be here tonight.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Ms. Hale told me to keep her upstairs.”

“Why?”

Nora hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Because Lily saw something.”

The room became silent.

I stepped closer.

“What did she see?”

Nora squeezed her hands together.

“She saw Ms. Hale putting something into your tea.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Three weeks.

I thought about that.

Three weeks ago was when my hearing problems became significantly worse.

I remembered the night.

I had returned home after midnight.

Vanessa said she had waited up for me.

She made me tea.

She kissed my forehead.

The next morning, the ringing in my ears was unbearable.

“What was in the tea?”

Nora shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because I tried.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What happened?”

Nora swallowed.

“I told Ms. Hale I thought something was wrong.”

“And?”

“She fired me.”

My expression hardened.

“But you’re still here.”

A painful smile appeared on her face.

“She let me stay because she knew I had nowhere else to go.”

I looked at her.

“You continued working for someone you believed was hurting me?”

Nora looked ashamed.

“I was trying to protect Lily.”

That answer stopped me.

Because I understood.

Fear could trap good people.

I had seen it before.

During corporate battles.

During lawsuits.

During negotiations where powerful people crushed those who had less power.

“Why tell me now?”

Nora looked toward the door.

“Because tonight is different.”

“What do you mean?”

“She knows Lily saw everything.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“How?”

Nora whispered.

“Because Lily disappeared from her room tonight.”

I looked toward the ballroom.

My mind raced.

“Vanessa was looking for her.”

Nora nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nora’s voice dropped.

“Because Ms. Hale told me something before the party started.”

“What?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“She said tonight had to be perfect.”

I waited.

Then Nora continued.

“She said after tonight, everything would belong to her.”

The words hung in the air.

Everything.

Not just the wedding.

Not just the relationship.

Everything.

My company.

My fortune.

My life.

Suddenly, the years I spent building my empire felt fragile.

I reached for my phone.

The unknown message was still there.

One question remained.

Who sent it?

Before I could think further, the storage room door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her smile was calm.

Too calm.

“There you are.”

Nora immediately stepped back.

Vanessa looked between us.

Then at Lily, who was standing behind me.

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But this time, I caught it clearly.

Anger.

Pure anger.

Then she smiled.

“What are you doing hiding back here?”

I looked at the woman I was supposed to marry.

The woman everyone admired.

The woman who might have been poisoning me for months.

And I realized something terrifying.

Vanessa wasn’t worried that I had discovered her secret.

She was worried that Lily had survived long enough to tell me.

I forced myself to smile.

“Just talking.”

Vanessa walked closer.

“About what?”

I looked at her.

Then at Lily.

Then back at her.

“Nothing important.”

Her eyes narrowed.

Because Vanessa Hale knew me better than anyone.

May you like

And for the first time…

She knew I was lying.
