CHAPTER 14: THE UNCLE WHO INHERITED THE LIES

CHAPTER 14: THE UNCLE WHO INHERITED THE LIES
The word echoed in my mind.
Uncle.
A family member.
A person who shared my blood.

A person who had known my family before I was old enough to understand the world around me.
For fifteen years, I believed my enemies were outside the walls.
Business competitors.
Rivals.
People who wanted what I built.
But now I was learning something far more painful.
The greatest threats were never strangers.
They were the people who knew exactly where to hurt you.
I looked at my mother.
“Which uncle?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
That silence told me everything.
She was afraid to say the name.
“Mom.”
The word came out naturally.
The first time I had called her that in fifteen years.
Her eyes filled with tears.
But she forced herself to stay focused.
“Your father had one brother.”
My heart sank.
I already knew.
There was only one person.
One name that had been missing from every story.
“Jonathan Mercer.”
My breathing stopped.
Jonathan Mercer.
My father’s younger brother.
The man who disappeared after my father’s death.
The man everyone said moved overseas.
The man who supposedly wanted nothing to do with the company.
I remembered him from childhood.
A charming man.
Always smiling.
Always bringing gifts.
Always telling me I would become a great businessman someday.
I had loved him.
I had trusted him.
My mother continued.
“Jonathan was there the night your father died.”
I stared.
“What?”
She nodded.
“He knew about the meeting.”
“What meeting?”
“The meeting where your father planned to expose Victor.”
The room became silent.
Ethan looked shocked.
“So Jonathan knew everything?”
“Yes.”
“And he did nothing?”
My mother looked down.
“He did more than nothing.”
The words were heavy.
I felt something cold move through me.
“What did he do?”
She closed her eyes.
“He changed the route.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The night of the crash, your father changed his travel plans.”
My mother looked at me.
“Only a few people knew the new route.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“And Jonathan was one of them.”
Nobody spoke.
The pieces were coming together.
Slowly.
Painfully.
My uncle.
Victor.
My father’s death.
My mother’s disappearance.
Everything connected.
But one question remained.
“If Jonathan was involved…”
I looked at my mother.
“Why am I alive?”
She didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Because Jonathan needed you.”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“My father discovered that Jonathan didn’t want to destroy the Mercer family.”
“Then what did he want?”
Her voice became quiet.
“Control.”
I stared.
“Control of what?”
“Everything.”
She looked at the mansion.
“The company.”
“The assets.”
“The research.”
“Your father’s secrets.”
A sick feeling grew inside me.
Jonathan wasn’t after revenge.
He was after power.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Nobody moved.
Everyone knew.
This time, I answered.
“Hello, Jonathan.”
A pause.
Then a familiar voice.
A voice from my childhood.
A voice I never expected to hear again.
“Alexander.”
I closed my eyes.
Hearing him was worse than seeing him.
Because memories came back.
Birthday parties.
Family dinners.
The man who carried me on his shoulders.
The man who told me my father was a hero.
“Where are you?”
He laughed softly.
“You sound angry.”
“You lied to me.”
Another pause.
“I suppose I did.”
The calmness made my blood boil.
“You knew my mother was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about my father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew someone was poisoning me.”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
My hands tightened.
The anger inside me became almost impossible to control.
“You admit it?”
Jonathan sighed.
“Alexander, you have always been emotional when you discover uncomfortable truths.”
The same tactic.
The same manipulation.
Making me seem unstable.
Making me question myself.
“Did you poison me?”
A long silence.
Then he answered.
“No.”
I didn’t believe him.
“Why should I?”
“Because if I wanted you dead, you would be dead.”
The words were terrifying.
Not because of the threat.
Because they sounded like a fact.
“What do you want?”
Jonathan became quiet.
Then:
“I want you to stop digging.”
I laughed.
“You killed my father.”
“No.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
“Then what did you do?”
His voice became colder.
“I protected what belonged to the Mercer family.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“You don’t understand what your father discovered.”
“Then explain.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because once you know the truth…”
A pause.
“...you won’t know who to trust.”
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
My mother looked terrified.
Vanessa looked confused.
Ethan looked toward the security monitors.
Then suddenly, he spoke.
“Alexander.”
I turned.
“What?”
He pointed at the screen.
“There’s movement outside.”
We all looked.
A black vehicle had stopped near the entrance gate.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Well-dressed.
Confident.
Even from the distance, I recognized him.
Jonathan Mercer.
My uncle.
He wasn’t hiding.
He wasn’t running.
He was walking straight toward my house.
Toward me.
The man who had been a part of my childhood.
The man connected to my father’s death.
The man who might know the truth about everything.
My mother whispered:
“He came here because he knows we found the letter.”
I looked at the entrance.
The locks were already disengaging.
Someone had opened the gate.
Not forced.
Opened.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Ethan.
Then my mother.
The same thought crossed all our minds.
Jonathan wasn’t breaking into my home.
He was being invited in.
And the worst part was…
I knew exactly who had given him permission.
The security system showed one name.
The person who had accessed the estate controls.
Alexander Mercer.
My own authorization.
Someone had used my identity again.
Just like before.
Just like the cameras.
Just like the medical records.
Someone was still inside my life.
Someone was still controlling the game.
And as Jonathan walked through the front door…
May you like
I realized the biggest betrayal had not happened fifteen years ago.
It was happening right now.
