CHAPTER 8: THE NAME SHE TRIED TO BURY

CHAPTER 8: THE NAME SHE TRIED TO BURY

I had spent my entire life believing I was good at reading people.

It was how I built my company.

How I survived impossible negotiations.

How I knew when someone across the table was hiding a weakness.

But Vanessa Hale had done something no business rival had ever managed to do.

She had entered my life.

She had earned my trust.

And she had convinced me that losing her would be my greatest fear.

Now I was starting to realize something much worse.

The person I trusted most might have been the person I needed to fear.

I stayed in my office long after Ethan left.

The photograph remained on my desk.

Vanessa standing beside Daniel Whitmore.

Two people who should never have been connected.

Five years earlier, Daniel had tried to destroy Mercer Ridge Technologies.

He was once my closest business partner.

My mentor.

The man who taught me how to negotiate.

Then I discovered he had been secretly moving company assets into private accounts.

When I confronted him, he denied everything.

The lawsuit lasted almost a year.

In the end, I won.

Daniel lost his position.

His reputation collapsed.

And he disappeared.

I thought he was gone forever.

Apparently, I was wrong.

I picked up the photograph again.

The image was clear.

Too clear.

Whoever sent this wanted me to see it.

But why?

To help me?

Or to manipulate me?

That question bothered me.

Because there was one person who seemed to know every move before I made it.

The anonymous messenger.

I grabbed my phone.

I typed.

I need answers.

The message showed as delivered.

No response.

I waited.

One minute.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Nothing.

I placed the phone down.

Then I noticed something.

A small reflection in the office window.

A person standing outside.

I turned quickly.

Nobody was there.

But my instincts told me something.

I was not alone.

I walked toward the door and opened it.

The hallway was empty.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

I stepped outside.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Then I saw it.

A small object on the floor.

A flash drive.

I picked it up.

There was no label.

No name.

Nothing.

I brought it back to my desk and connected it to my computer.

A single folder appeared.

MERCER PROJECT

My heart started racing.

I opened it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Photos.

Reports.

Emails.

And then I saw the first file.

A name.

Vanessa Elise Hale.

I clicked.

The information loaded.

Age.

Education.

Previous addresses.

Employment history.

Most of it looked normal.

Until I reached one section.

Family.

I stopped.

Because the name listed there was not Hale.

It was another last name.

A name I recognized.

Vanessa Elise Whitmore.

I stared at the screen.

Whitmore.

Daniel Whitmore.

My former partner.

My enemy.

My mind struggled to process it.

Vanessa wasn’t connected to Daniel.

She was his daughter.

I leaned back slowly.

Suddenly everything felt different.

The relationship.

The engagement.

The timing.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

It all looked like part of a plan.

A revenge plan.

A plan that started years before I ever met her.

My phone rang.

I almost dropped it.

It was Dr. Emily Carter.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?”

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Alexander, where are you?”

“At home.”

“Are you alone?”

I looked toward the hallway.

“No.”

A pause.

“Who is there?”

“Staff.”

She lowered her voice.

“Listen carefully.”

I sat down.

“What happened?”

“I reviewed the original medical data.”

“And?”

“There is something you need to know.”

I waited.

Emily took a breath.

“The substance affecting you wasn’t random.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What was it?”

“It’s a compound that can cause neurological symptoms over time.”

“Like hearing loss?”

“Yes.”

“Can it be treated?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Relief almost came.

Then she continued.

“But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“The dosage was carefully controlled.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means whoever gave it to you understood exactly what they were doing.”

My stomach turned.

“Meaning?”

“Someone researched how much your body could tolerate.”

Silence.

I looked at Vanessa’s file on my screen.

Her hidden identity.

Her connection to Daniel.

Her access to my life.

Everything pointed in one direction.

But something still bothered me.

If Vanessa wanted revenge…

Why keep me alive?

Why not destroy me immediately?

Why slowly weaken me?

I asked Emily.

“Could someone use this to make a person appear mentally unstable?”

She became quiet.

“Yes.”

My blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“Because if someone wanted to challenge your decisions…”

She paused.

“They could argue you were no longer capable of controlling your company.”

The room felt colder.

This was bigger than money.

Bigger than revenge.

Someone wasn’t trying to kill Alexander Mercer.

They were trying to erase him.

To make the world believe I was no longer capable of leading.

I ended the call.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming toward my office.

I closed the laptop.

A second later, the door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

She looked beautiful.

Perfect.

Like always.

“You’ve been busy.”

I smiled.

“Just working.”

She walked inside.

Her eyes moved around the room.

Then stopped on my desk.

For one brief moment…

I thought she saw the flash drive.

But her expression didn’t change.

“I was looking for you.”

“Why?”

She smiled.

“Because I miss you.”

Those words would have meant everything to me yesterday.

Tonight, they meant nothing.

I stood.

“Vanessa.”

“Yes?”

I looked directly at her.

“Who is Daniel Whitmore?”

For the first time in our entire relationship…

She froze.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The fear.

The shock.

The realization.

She knew.

She knew I had discovered something.

Then, slowly…

Vanessa smiled.

A smile I had never seen before.

Cold.

Empty.

Dangerous.

“Where did you hear that name?”

I stepped closer.

“That’s my question.”

The room became silent.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You should have stopped searching.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at me.

And for the first time…

She stopped pretending.

“You have no idea what you just uncovered.”

My heart pounded.

Because I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid that I discovered her secret.

She was afraid that I discovered something even worse.

Something she had been trying to hide.

May you like

Something connected to my past.

Something that could destroy both of us.
