CHAPTER 7: THE ALLIANCE OF THE BETRAYED

CHAPTER 7: THE ALLIANCE OF THE BETRAYED

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Ethan.

Not Vanessa.

The silence inside my office felt heavier than any argument.

Three people stood in the same room.

Three people connected by secrets.

And I was beginning to understand that every person around me had been hiding something.

The only question was whether those secrets were meant to hurt me…

Or protect me.

Vanessa stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she wanted to make sure nobody outside could hear.

“What exactly are you two discussing?”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

I had spent years reading people during negotiations.

A nervous person rushed their words.

An angry person raised their voice.

A guilty person avoided eye contact.

Vanessa did none of those things.

She controlled every reaction.

That was what made her dangerous.

I leaned back in my chair.

“Business.”

Her eyes moved to the folder on my desk.

“Business?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Interesting.”

Ethan shifted uncomfortably beside me.

Vanessa noticed.

Of course she noticed.

She noticed everything.

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

“Yes?”

“How long have you been investigating my accounts?”

The question shocked me.

Not because she knew.

Because she immediately assumed.

She wasn’t asking if he had done it.

She was asking how long he had been doing it.

Ethan stayed silent.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Alexander, I think there has been a misunderstanding.”

I smiled slightly.

“A misunderstanding?”

“Yes.”

She walked closer.

“These documents don’t mean what you think they mean.”

“Then explain them.”

She looked at the folder.

“These are company transactions.”

“I can see that.”

“Then you know they require context.”

I stared at her.

“You have a financial connection to a company receiving money from my accounts.”

Her expression remained calm.

“An investment.”

“Without telling me?”

She sighed.

“Because I knew you would react exactly like this.”

I almost laughed.

She was good.

Very good.

She was already turning the situation around.

Making herself the victim.

“I didn’t want to burden you with unnecessary details.”

“Unnecessary?”

I opened the folder.

“Two million dollars is unnecessary?”

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“Alexander, you’re tired.”

There it was again.

The same phrase.

The same weapon.

“You’re stressed.”

“You’re sick.”

“You’re not thinking clearly.”

My jaw tightened.

Because now I saw the pattern.

Every time I questioned something…

She reminded me that I was not well.

She wanted me to doubt myself.

“You think I’m imagining this?”

Her expression softened.

“No.”

She reached for my hand.

“I think you’re scared.”

I pulled my hand away.

The movement surprised her.

Only slightly.

But enough.

For the first time, I saw frustration beneath the perfect mask.

“You’ve changed,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Maybe I finally started paying attention.”

The room went silent.

Vanessa stared at me.

Ethan looked between us.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

A different smile.

Not the public one.

The private one.

The one I had never noticed before.

“Be careful, Alexander.”

The softness disappeared.

“You don’t want to destroy something because of a misunderstanding.”

I held her gaze.

“Is that a threat?”

Her smile returned.

“Of course not.”

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, she spoke.

“Sometimes when people are sick, they see enemies everywhere.”

The door closed.

I waited until her footsteps disappeared.

Then I looked at Ethan.

“Tell me everything.”

Ethan exhaled slowly.

“I should have told you earlier.”

“Yes.”

“I was suspicious before the engagement party.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He opened another document.

“Because I found unusual activity around your personal accounts.”

“What kind of activity?”

“Someone was reviewing your estate plans.”

My eyes narrowed.

“My estate plans?”

He nodded.

“Your inheritance documents.”

That made no sense.

My estate plans were private.

Only a few people knew about them.

“Who accessed them?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then answered.

“Vanessa.”

The room became quiet again.

I stood.

“When?”

“Several months ago.”

The same time my symptoms started.

The same time she became more involved in my life.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the lake was calm.

Peaceful.

Almost mocking.

“How much does she know?”

Ethan looked down.

“Almost everything.”

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?”

“She knows your assets.”

“She knows your insurance policies.”

“She knows your company structure.”

He paused.

“And she knows what happens if something happens to you before the wedding.”

I turned around.

“What happens?”

Ethan looked at me.

“She becomes the executor of certain financial decisions.”

I felt sick.

Not because of the money.

Because of the planning.

This wasn’t emotional.

This wasn’t impulsive.

This was organized.

Carefully prepared.

A plan built over time.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

This time, there was an attachment.

A photograph.

My breathing stopped.

It showed Vanessa.

Not at the party.

Not at my house.

Not with me.

She was standing in an unfamiliar office.

Talking to a man.

A man I recognized.

My former business partner.

Daniel Whitmore.

The man who betrayed my company five years earlier.

The man who tried to destroy everything I built.

Under the photograph was one sentence.

“Vanessa did not enter your life by accident.”

I stared at the picture.

A terrible realization began forming.

Maybe Vanessa had not chosen me because she loved me.

Maybe she had chosen me because of my name.

My money.

My company.

My weaknesses.

And maybe the woman I planned to marry…

Had been sent into my life as part of a revenge plan.

I looked at Ethan.

“We need to find out who she really is.”

Ethan nodded.

“But there is one problem.”

“What?”

He looked toward the closed door.

“Vanessa already knows we are suspicious.”

I felt a chill.

Because he was right.

The game had changed.

We were no longer secretly investigating her.

Now she was watching us.

May you like

And whoever moved first…

Would decide who survived.
