CHAPTER 1: THE WARNING BEHIND THE SILVER CURTAIN

CHAPTER 1: THE WARNING BEHIND THE SILVER CURTAIN

The words kept echoing inside my head.

“Don’t eat tonight.”

For years, I had trusted my instincts in business.

I knew when a deal was too good to be true.

I knew when a partner was hiding something.

I knew when someone smiled while secretly preparing a knife.

But standing in my own mansion, surrounded by hundreds of guests, I realized I had ignored the one person who mattered most.

Myself.

I looked at Lily, the little girl with the worn-out stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.

Her tiny hands were still shaking.

She wasn’t trying to scare me.

She was trying to save me.

I lowered myself so we were at the same height.

“Lily,” I signed carefully.

“Tell me what you saw.”

The little girl looked toward the ballroom.

Then she looked back at me.

Fear filled her eyes.

She slowly raised her hands.

“Pretty lady.”

“Your food.”

“Medicine.”

My stomach tightened.

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A child’s imagination.

Anything except the horrifying possibility forming inside my mind.

Because the woman Lily was talking about was Vanessa Hale.

My fiancée.

The woman I planned to marry in three months.

The woman who slept beside me every night.

The woman who held my hand when doctors told me they could not explain why my hearing was disappearing.

I glanced toward the ballroom doors.

Vanessa was still standing there.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

Perfect appearance.

She looked like the woman everyone admired.

But Lily looked like someone who had seen something nobody else was supposed to know.

A sudden sound came from behind us.

Footsteps.

Lily immediately froze.

Her little fingers grabbed my jacket.

I turned around.

Nora, the housekeeper, stood near the service hallway.

Her face was pale.

She looked terrified.

“Mr. Mercer,” she whispered.

“I’m sorry.”

I studied her expression.

Not guilt.

Fear.

There was a difference.

“What happened here tonight?” I asked.

Nora looked at Lily.

Then at me.

Then toward the ballroom.

“Please don’t ask questions here.”

That answer made my suspicion grow.

I stepped closer.

“Why?”

Her lips trembled.

“Because people are watching.”

At that exact moment, the lights inside the ballroom flickered.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Guests turned toward the stage.

A microphone clicked.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Everyone, may I have your attention?”

Her voice sounded warm.

Elegant.

Loving.

Exactly the voice everyone expected from the future wife of a billionaire.

I watched her through the glass doors.

She raised a champagne glass.

“To love.”

The crowd smiled.

“To loyalty.”

People applauded.

“And to a future built together.”

Everyone looked at me.

Waiting for me to join her.

But I couldn’t move.

Because a tiny child had just told me the woman holding that glass might be destroying my life.

Vanessa turned her head.

Our eyes met.

For a brief second, something changed.

Her smile disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

A flash of irritation.

A warning.

Then she smiled again.

Like nothing happened.

I knew that look.

I had seen it during billion-dollar negotiations.

The moment someone realized their plan was falling apart.

I walked back into the ballroom slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

Vanessa extended her hand.

“There you are.”

Her voice was soft.

Almost affectionate.

“I was worried.”

I looked at the glass in her hand.

Then at the dinner tables.

Thousands of dollars worth of food.

Prepared by chefs she personally selected.

My favorite dishes.

My favorite wine.

Everything chosen by the woman I trusted most.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

I forced a smile.

“I’m fine.”

Her eyes searched my face.

“You look pale.”

“I’m just tired.”

She touched my cheek.

The guests around us smiled.

They saw romance.

They saw devotion.

They saw a perfect couple.

But I felt something else.

A performance.

A carefully designed performance.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“You need to relax tonight.”

I nodded.

“Of course.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Then she whispered.

“Don’t ruin this evening.”

The words were quiet.

Almost impossible for anyone else to hear.

But I heard them.

And for the first time in months…

I wondered if my hearing problem was not a medical mystery.

I wondered if someone wanted me to believe I was losing my mind.

I looked across the room.

Lily stood beside Nora near the hallway.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

I gave the smallest possible nod.

A signal.

I believed her.

The moment Vanessa turned away, I walked toward the dining area.

A server approached with my plate.

“Mr. Mercer, your special order.”

I stared at the food.

The same meal Vanessa had requested for me.

The same meal she always prepared when I came home late.

My hand moved toward the fork.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

A small detail I had ignored.

For months.

Every time my hearing became worse…

It happened after dinner.

Every single time.

I looked around the room.

Two hundred people were laughing.

Celebrating.

Drinking.

Believing they were witnessing the beginning of a beautiful love story.

But I was standing in the middle of it.

Realizing I might be trapped inside the biggest lie of my life.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One warning.

“If you want to survive tonight, pretend you trust Vanessa.”

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because whoever sent that message knew exactly what was happening.

And they were inside my house.
