Chapter 9: The Girl Everyone Was Searching For

Chapter 9: The Girl Everyone Was Searching For

The words stayed in the air.

Like smoke after a fire.

“They were searching for Daniel Carter’s daughter.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I couldn’t.

My arms tightened around Emma before I even realized I was doing it.

My daughter looked up at me.

Confused.

Sleepy.

Completely unaware that powerful people were suddenly looking at her like she held the answer to a mystery that had lasted fifteen years.

“Mama…”

She whispered.

“Why is everyone looking at me?”

My heart broke.

Because she was just a child.

A little girl who loved bedtime stories.

A little girl who carried stuffed animals everywhere.

A little girl who thought every problem could be solved with a hug.

She was not a secret.

She was not a weapon.

She was not a piece in someone else’s game.

Alessandro stepped closer.

His body moved slightly in front of us.

Protecting us.

A billionaire.

An empire leader.

A man who had spent his entire life surrounded by danger.

Yet in that moment…

He wasn’t protecting his fortune.

He was protecting a child.

“Explain.”

His voice was directed at Isabella.

Not loud.

Not angry.

But everyone felt the warning underneath.

Isabella looked at him.

“Not here.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Here.”

A pause.

“You disappeared for seven years.”

Another pause.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

His voice hardened.

“You let me bury you.”

The room became silent.

“Now you walk back into my house and tell me a little girl is connected to everything?”

He stepped closer.

“You will explain.”

Isabella looked at her son.

And for the first time…

I saw pain in her eyes.

Not manipulation.

Not fear.

Pain.

“I know what you think of me.”

She whispered.

“You think I abandoned you.”

Alessandro didn’t answer.

“Maybe I deserve that.”

A pause.

“But everything I did was to keep you alive.”

“Alive?”

His voice cracked slightly.

“You call that living?”

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Because it wasn’t about business.

It was about a son who spent years believing his mother left him.

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

Alessandro laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You erased yourself from my life.”

“I saved your life.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“You saved a version of yourself.”

The room went quiet.

Even Isabella had no immediate response.

Then Adrian’s voice came through the speakers.

Everyone turned.

A slow clap echoed from somewhere inside the mansion.

“Beautiful.”

The sound traveled through the ballroom.

“Very emotional.”

Alessandro immediately looked toward the security team.

“Find him.”

The guards moved.

But Adrian continued.

“Still trying to control everything.”

A pause.

“You haven’t changed.”

The screens turned on again.

Adrian appeared.

This time, he was standing somewhere else.

A hidden room.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Documents covered the table.

He had been preparing for this moment.

For years.

Alessandro stared at him.

“Come out.”

Adrian smiled.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if I walk into that room…”

His eyes moved toward Isabella.

“You will ask questions you are not ready to hear.”

Isabella looked at the screen.

“Adrian.”

Her voice was soft.

Almost sad.

“You should have stayed away.”

His expression changed.

“You should have told him the truth.”

The tension between them was immediate.

Alessandro noticed.

“You two know more than you’re saying.”

Neither answered.

That was enough.

Alessandro turned toward his brother’s image.

“What does Emma have to do with this?”

Adrian looked at me.

Then at Emma.

His expression changed.

Not cruel.

Not cold.

Almost regretful.

“Her father found something.”

I swallowed.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

My hands trembled.

“What did he find?”

Adrian looked down.

“A ledger.”

Nobody spoke.

“What ledger?”

“The original records of the Moretti family.”

Alessandro frowned.

“My father’s company records?”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“The records before the company.”

The room became colder.

“Before the empire.”

Alessandro stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian looked at him.

“The Moretti family fortune wasn’t built the way everyone thinks.”

A pause.

“Your grandfather created the empire using stolen information.”

Silence.

“And your father discovered it.”

Alessandro’s face changed.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“He was trying to expose it?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was he killed?”

Adrian looked toward Isabella.

“Because someone wanted the truth buried.”

Everyone looked at her.

Isabella closed her eyes.

Alessandro noticed.

“You know.”

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

The word destroyed him.

“You knew?”

“I knew your father was in danger.”

“And you did nothing?”

“I tried.”

Her voice broke.

“I tried to stop it.”

“But you failed.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro looked away.

For a moment, nobody saw the powerful businessman.

They saw a son.

A son realizing his family was built on secrets.

Adrian continued.

“Daniel Carter found the ledger years later.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because the company he worked for was connected to it.”

My breathing stopped.

“The construction project…”

Adrian nodded.

“Was never just a construction project.”

A chill moved through me.

“He was investigating the same people who killed your father.”

I whispered:

“Then his accident…”

“Was not an accident.”

The words broke something inside me.

Three years.

Three years I had forced myself to accept that Daniel was gone.

Three years I had told Emma stories about a father she would never remember.

Three years believing I had lost him to bad luck.

But now…

The truth was worse.

Someone had taken him.

Alessandro looked at me.

For the first time, he didn’t see me as an employee.

He saw my pain.

“I’m sorry.”

Two words.

Simple.

But from him…

They carried weight.

I looked away.

“I don’t need apologies.”

My voice shook.

“I need answers.”

And for the first time that night…

Everyone understood something.

I wasn’t just the maid anymore.

I wasn’t the woman who accidentally exposed Vanessa.

I was part of the reason this entire empire was falling apart.

Because Daniel Carter had left behind something.

Something someone was willing to kill for.

Adrian looked at Emma.

“She has it.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

Adrian continued.

“Daniel hid the ledger before he died.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“Where?”

Adrian looked directly at Emma.

“He left the only copy with the person nobody would suspect.”

My arms tightened around my daughter.

“No.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Your daughter has been carrying the evidence all this time.”

The room froze.

I looked at Emma.

“How?”

Adrian answered:

“Because Daniel hid it inside the one thing he knew you would never lose.”

My mind raced.

A memory suddenly appeared.

Daniel’s last week alive.

The night before his accident.

He had held Emma while she slept.

He had kissed her forehead.

And he had whispered something I thought was just a father’s promise.

"Daddy left you something important, princess."

I had forgotten.

Until now.

My hand slowly moved toward the small necklace Emma always wore.

The necklace Daniel gave her before he died.

The necklace I thought was only a keepsake.

Isabella’s face changed.

“You still have it.”

I looked up.

“What?”

She stared at the necklace.

“That necklace…”

Her voice became fearful.

“Was never a gift.”

Thunder shook the mansion.

And suddenly…

Everyone understood.

May you like

The truth Daniel Carter died protecting…

Was hanging around my daughter’s neck.
